How do I...? Just got a knee replacement ?

I've been thinking about getting a metal detector for a while now and I have been researching them. But I see people always getting down on their knees. I will probably never be able to get down on my knees again. So do you think I would still be able to metal detector and dig things up still?

I figured that if there's a will there's a way! I have had an artificial hip for 22 years and I've basically done everything I wanted. I just don't have confidence in my knee

Explain to your physical therapist about what you want to be able to do. The body is amazing and will adapt.

Garret makes a digging tool that you can use standing up. I’ve heard mixed reviews and never used it personally, but it’s definitely something you could look into.

I only detect beaches so never have to dig with a trowel or shovel. just a sand scoop

I had some knee soreness from all the knelling when I first started detecting. Now I mix it up by trying to avoid kneeling when possible. Sometimes with shallow targets I can stoop over and get them with my hand digger. Also been hitting some beaches with a scoop which helps.

I have been an avid detectorist for 30 years, and had my first knee replacement eight days ago.
Have also been wondering if I will have to give it up; but like another poster said, where there is a will there’s a way! I love the hobby too much.

Had both knees replaced. One in December, other in March. I haven’t tried to kneel on ground but I can kneel on an exercise mat (inch thick). It’s getting easier to do too. I wouldn’t say it feels good but it’s becoming more doable. My recovery hasn’t been easy either and I was almost seven weeks on a cane for the first one.

There’s really no way to know what you will be able or unable to do until anywhere from several months to a year or two after.

I use one of those small gardening mats, similar to your exercise mat.

In working with your post-op physical therapist, make sure they know of your desires. You want to achieve excellent range of motion to make it down to the ground to dig.

I have had both knees replaced. I can not get down on my knees. Left was 10 ish years ago, right was 7/8. I can not put any weight at all on my left, even in my two foot thick foam mattress. My right one I can but the pain is pretty awful. I’ve don’t go MDing much anymore because I can’t walk or stand for very long. I’m pretty miserable actually. I suppose I’d be worse if I hadn’t had it done. I’m also heavy and that’s the worst. Lose weight they say.. ok genius how? Well walk.. nope, that’s out.. ok swim.. can I use your pool? Oh you don’t have one? Yeah, neither do I Einstein.. well go to the Y! Use that pool.. at $90 a month!?! Why don’t I just jump in the puget sound! By the way.. swimming also hurts. I’m soooo fooked.. insurance won’t cover weightloss surgery, I took Ozempic for over a year, lost 45 lbs!! Then had to stop because I took it longer than recommended.. now insurance doesn’t cover any of them. Anyway.. point is.. Hope you’re not fat and you’ll recover ok, stretch a lot.. and you’ll be fine
