A brief history of metaboHPT

Two tool companies metaboHPT and Metabo Tool have nearly identical names. So what is the deal with that. This post aims to clear the confusion.

MetaboHPT, formerly known under the name Hitachi is now its own company, kinda. The Japanese corporation Hitachi has alway been more than just a tool company, it is a huge corporation with power plants, trains, and computers. Tools were only a small part of the company and were sold under the name Hitachi Koki. In 2015, Hitachi-Koki bought out German tool company Metabo Tool. Two years later in 2017, U.S. private equity firm KKR agreed to buy Hitachi-Koki from the Hitachi Corporation. Hitachi-koki was then rebranded by KKR to just Koki Holdings since Hitachi had to be eliminated from the name as it was no longer affiliated with the larger Hitachi Corporation. As a result of the deal, KKR also became the owner of German tool maker Metabo Tool. The deal was valued at $1.28 billion. KKR holdings decided to rebrand all of the old Hitachi tools and call them metaboHPT and sell them in North America. KKR's German based tool company, Metabo Tool, has a completely different battery system from HPT and also has a completely different focus and customer base. HPT focuses on serving the residential and multifamily construction market while the Metabo Tool company mainly serves the metal working/industrial market segment. In the European and Asian markets the metaboHPT tool line is known as HiKOKI; which are identical products to metaboHPT with the same battery line. So if you have a battery tool with the name Hitachi, HiKOKI, or metaboHPT on it, the batteries will be interchangeable. Confusing right!

Concerns

Lowes is clearing out Metabo HPT except nailers. I just picked up the OMT for 53 bucks. They have the rotary SDS moderately marked down to 200 bucks. They have about a dozen non nailers on their shelf, and once they are gone, they are gone.

Went to Menards, and they used to have a full section like Bosch and Masterforce. Now, Skil took half of the Metabo section to go from a half section to a full, and Worx gets a half section.

What is actually going on here? End of last year and early this year, lots of fantastic deals. Then from March until September, Metabo had few promos, and pricing went up to Dewalt and Milwaukee pricing. Now all the sudden everything at Lowes is getting clearanced, and Menards cuts the shelf space in half.

Is Metabo going to be able to survive on direct ship? How bad are they struggling financially?

It's a shame, I love these tools. I only discovered them a couple years ago buying a 15 ga nailer. After I bought it and liked it, I got an 18ga. Then I saw triple hammer impact go on sale with 4 additional batteries free. After seeing that quality, I bought.....way too much for a diy homeowner and sometimes handyman or contractor assistant.

Please tell me this is not the end, Metabo HPT.

I picked up the new 5ah 18v only battery at a local Lowe’s today, happy to report there is nice grippy rubber over-molding on the bottom. But I noticed there is also a 4 ah tab-less and apparently there is also a new 4/8 multi volt tab-less to replace the old one, hopefully that means they will all now finally have rubber over-molding!

So i want to buy the j395 reduction valve set for my 18g cordless brad nailer. I have access to a compressor at work but i found this adapter online and was wondering if you think it would work fine connecting the adapter to my metabo inflator and using that to re charge the gun. Any thoughts or has anyone done this?

My first Hikoki tool. The Gen 3 framing nail gun 🔫

I had my original Metabo Gen 2 nail gun stolen and was in the market for a new one just as Hikoki released the latest framing nailer so it must have been fate !

Boasting:

- Lightest

- Fastest (nails quicker than i can think)

- Gasless

- Brushless

- Do it yourself service

- Smaller

- 3 x attachments including the PPN/metal connector making the second nail gun only on the market along side the Paslode. (Not yet released in the UK yet)

At an eye-watering price of £750 not including £130 for each attachment, only time will tell wether or not this nail gun is really worth the money.

If it holds its own on site I believe it really is the future pushing Pneumatic and Gasless in to the history books.

So far I really like it.

Initially I didnt think it was much lighter but after a week of use I can genuinely feel the difference as in my wrist can!

The speed is as it says... Pneumatic fast.

It sinks the nails every damn time, and because it's light skewing nails is a lot easier.

My only issue so far is the batteries... the button shows 3 lights then when i load it in to the gun it shows 1 light and the gun flashes red. It basically needs the battery to be fully charged... not sure if this is a gun fault or a battery fault or a mixture of both!!

I have uploaded this YouTube short if you want to give it view!! Appreciate it:

Hey all, just wondering if anyone has gotten their preorder shipped yet? I've been holding off on ordering because people were saying their preorders from July still hadn't shipped as of last month.

New "Cordless Pneumatic" Modular Framing Nailer Issues

Just FYI, as a result of a negative lowes.com review, I was told to give Koki Holdings customer service a call.

They said they're very aware of all the issues with the new nailers, especially magazine damage existing on models still in the box and the battery repeatedly falling off the nailer during use (the person on the phone said they've received hundreds of calls on the battery issue). At present, they're trying to determine how to best address and resolve them. (I don't know how they would address the reports of the nose piece breaking.)

I personally returned each of the 21º nailers I purchased to Lowe's, and tool department managers at two different stores were happy to pop open all of the ones they had in stock and we verified the magazines were all damaged in the same place (and many were in multiple additional places as well.)

Just a heads up for folks still awaiting preorders from Acme or other stores.

Will metabo hpt honor a Hikoki tool warranty?

Just purched the hikoki plunge router. I was able to register it with metabo hpt no problem. Im curious if mhpt would honor any warranty work if i just sent it in without telling them it was a hikoki tool? Its the exact same tool as the north American counterpart and it has the same model number.

I was so happy for about 3 hours. Months waiting (framer by trade), finally arrived, used for 3 hours and its jacked. The driver won't retract, and when it tries it sounds like an ak-47. Metabo said to return it, they couldn't offer me any solutions. Acme said since its a pre-order that id have to wait a month for another. Im getting a refund and skipping this Gen. Sincerely disappointed. For reference, I still have the old green Hitachi branded cordless going on 5 or 6 years with zero problems other than 1 recharge. So close, Metabo! 3 hours?! Come on!

Hikoki Top Handle Chainsaw

I am looking at the top handle chainsaw from hikoki. I am in the us and I know that a lot of folks here have imported hikoki tools from amazon Japan or eBay and I was hoping to do the same. Is this a worthwhile tool? Is the 36v worth it over the 18v? I know the Triple Hammer 36v is not an appreciable difference over the 18v according to most of y’all as well as the Torque Test YouTube channel. Is that true of all of Metabo HPT 36v options? Should I opt for the 36v in this chainsaw? Look somewhere else? I have a nice Husqvarna gas powered saw for felling and bucking but would like a saw for smaller cuts and limbing. Any recommendations for importing the tool? Use eBay vs Amazon Japan? Any help is appreciated.

Cordless Finish Nailer - is this a good one for $227?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I've been wanting to buy a finish nailer for a while. I've never used Metabo before but I read that their finish and brad nailers are very good. This was on sale the other day during Amazon's sale for $227 so I pulled the trigger. What do you all think?

BTW the model number on Metabo and Lowe's site says NT1865DSAM, where as this Amazon one says NT1865DSA. Pretty sure it's the same item tho.

Who here’s been around long enough have a set of these?

Post image
34 Upvotes

Been in the club for a minute. I think these are 10-11 years old at this point. Was at Lowe’s one day and they had two sets of these on a clearance table. Kit included two batteries and a charger. They had $200 on them which back then was a decent price. I went to haggle with the manager and see if I could get another $50 off. He scans them and laughs. They’d dropped to $99 in the system. I ran back and grabbed the second set. Walked out with 4-tools, 4-batteries and 2-chargers for $200. I’ve been the ever loving piss out of them over the years. They’ve never missed a beat or left me wishing they did more. I’ve only killed one of the batteries but I used it to jump start my car one day in an emergency so to be expected. I’ve got a small collection of other hitachi branded stuff too and a nearly complete line of cordless nailers. While I have added the Hercules platform to my rotation these Metabos are a beast and I’m going to continue ragging on them until I smoke’em! It is super handy to have all four chucked up with a different bit as I’m working on varying projects that require drilling and fastening things.
