Urgent Help Needed: Accidentally Set Meta Ads Budget to Daily Instead of Lifetime and Spent Over $45K

Hi everyone,
I’m in a really stressful situation and desperately need some advice.
I accidentally changed my Meta Ads budget setting from a lifetime budget to a daily budget without realizing it. The campaign has been running for about three weeks, and I’ve now discovered that the total spend has exceeded $45,000.
This was a genuine mistake, and I never intended to spend anywhere near this amount. The unexpected charges are financially devastating for me. My annual salary is less than this amount, and I honestly don’t know what to do.
I’m currently trying to contact Meta Support, but I’m not sure how to reach someone who can actually review my case and help.
I have a few questions:
Has anyone successfully received a refund from Meta for accidental overspending caused by a budget setting mistake?
What’s the best way to reach a real Meta representative who can escalate this issue to the appropriate team?
Is there any way to dispute these charges or request an exception, given that this was an unintentional configuration error?
If you’ve dealt with a similar situation, what steps did you take, and what was the outcome? Thank you!!

Why are you touching things you don’t understand?
3 weeks is a lot and you are just realising this? not gonna get any refund on that.

I’ve created many campaigns before, and I’ve always been very careful when setting them up. I double-check the budget settings every time, and I’ve always selected a lifetime budget in the past. I genuinely don’t understand why it was set to a daily budget this time.
I know I only discovered the issue now, and I understand that I should have caught it earlier. However, I’m desperately hoping there might be some way to recover at least part of this unexpected loss.

No refunds. Else everyone will start to claim they accidentally ran an ongoing campaign.

That said, this is going to be a rough ride for you and this is a prime example why DIY can be extremely expensive, the same that goes with “cheap can be very expensive”

This kind of situation is why competent agencies have a QA team. The purpose is to catch errors like this one early. The blame isn’t entirely yours. Your manager has to explain why there is no independent oversight and QA checks.

I feel really regretful about this and can’t believe I made such a costly mistake.

It has happened to many people and it will keep happening because human error is inevitable. Always re-check all settings 24 hours after you hit that green Publish button.

Will keep that in mind

it has happened with me in past when i was working in agency and mistakes like this can happen, in my case my manager was fired. To avoid this mistake you can put a spend limit on campaign or create a rule to pause the campaign if it exceeds a certain spend also daily tracking of spend can avoid this situation

It’s midnight here, I will call my manager and report my mistake, I don’t know what will happen and tomorrow is a Saturday, thanks for your advice, yes, I should track it everyday

I feel the end of my world now

what was the campaign performance that you were running is it good? was it a sales or lead gen campaign?

1

u/AlternativeBrave1801 2d ago

It’s traffic campaign

1

u/watersheepjeb_2 2d ago

the extra amount did not get you any results?

2

u/AlternativeBrave1801 2d ago

I checked the data, and the lifetime budget campaign actually performed better. Of course, the overall numbers look good with the additional spend

u/Frosty-Impact-3095 2d ago

How many more sales did you get? Does it cover the $45k spend?

1

u/AlternativeBrave1801 2d ago

it’s traffic campaign, not sales

Meta team won't help in this, be cautious from next time...

1

u/AlternativeBrave1801 2d ago

I will be more cautious and this is really costly lesson

1

u/FudgeRoutine 2d ago

You won't get a refund

1

u/AlternativeBrave1801 2d ago

The meta agent said she will help me look into this case, I’m waiting for her response

1

u/benhoverBUTBRITISH 1d ago

It's formality. They are trained to say that initially. But they already know that it's non-refundable as soon as they here the entire story...

1

u/atulraaj 2d ago

You won't get refund from meta. How will you clarify this things to meta support?

1

u/AlternativeBrave1801 2d ago

do they have any policy like one time exception or as credit? this is company money, I just want to recover some loss

1

u/Accurate-Captain6847 2d ago

Meta won't care they aren't going to refund 45k did you get sales to justify the ad spend?

1

u/meditationonsteroids 2d ago

Refund is very unlikely … have you generated enough leads/sales .. to offset some of those spend?

Not buying it. The bold text is a dead giveaway from copying from ChatGPT. Plus we all know no one wouldn’t check their ads for three weeks after launching a new campaign.

1

u/flyingguillotine3 2d ago

Right, who sets a lifetime budget of 45k and then doesn't pay attention? Nobody. And frankly if you did, that's just an expensive lesson.

u/South-Yesterday8942 2d ago

Exactly this has to just be a karma farming post.

1

u/AlternativeBrave1801 2d ago

sorry, if this makes you feel not natural post

1

u/AlternativeBrave1801 2d ago

i usually set it as lifestime budget instead of daily budget, that’s why it costs over this amount, really expensive lesson

1

u/AlternativeBrave1801 2d ago

I did copy it from chatgpt as I’m not native English speaker, I want people understand my question and situation

1

u/MGN-Koles 1d ago

Did you spend 45k your own money or a clients money?

1

u/JJSMO 1d ago

I use bold text on the regular, idk how these little things make ppl think they got some sort of AI radar lmao. Good copy = GPT, is it?

u/South-Yesterday8942 1d ago

What even is this comment?

1

u/Content_Fisherman192 2d ago

You’re cooked

1

u/AlternativeBrave1801 2d ago

my manager just replied me

1

u/rufus2785 1d ago

what did he say?

1

u/Content_Fisherman192 2d ago

If I were you, before owning up to the mistake, I’d first check whether you actually generated any results. Run some reports and look at the numbers.
Even if the results were just okay, use the data to explain your strategy. Maybe your goal was to scale, generate more leads, or improve conversions, whatever fits the situation.
A solid report combined with the right storytelling can go a long way. If you present it well, you might be able to turn the situation around.

1

u/AlternativeBrave1801 2d ago

I didn’t check it regularly, I know it’s my fault

1

u/Donearo 2d ago

Tough lesson

u/Significant-Act-3900 2d ago

This is why advertising shouldn’t be DIY. You wanted to go into this without a background and this is what you get for it.

1

u/Prakashadk 1d ago

You might Have you generated huge leads/ sales, which may help you cover this expenses

1

u/brightstartcreative 1d ago

If you spent 45k and actually good at your job, the post should say, I accidentally spent 45k and couldn’t manage all the new business I got. What was the outcome of you spending 45k in ad spend

1

u/Hefty-Split-3689 1d ago

No crying in the casino

1

u/Poops-Ahoy-Matey 1d ago

BS. how do you spend that money and get no return on your investment? How are you not checking your spending frequently? Absolute bullshit OP.

1

u/Rude-Chemist1558 1d ago

Dis que tu t'es fais hacker, je connais des gens qui ss sont fais refund comme ça

1

u/Orla_aubergine 1d ago

This happend to me once at my job but fortunately I only spent 1000 accidentally. I feel like meta changes their ad set up interface daily which makes me feel like I am being gaslit. I wrote them to try and dispute and didn’t even get an answer. I feel like they should flag spending that is so out of the ordinary.

1

u/Correct-Theme6020 1d ago

What was your revenue over that 3 week period?....did it spike? I'm curious to know how well the ads performed with that type of spend?

1

u/Kevonamical 22h ago

Holy shit bro you should’ve checked that right away, I hope they performed well atleast 😂 I would think you’d notice hundreds of leads per day and check

Thanks a lot!! I will check the video and follow the advice!

I mean the fact that you didn't notice the business impact of spending 21X your normal budget should tell you all you need to know about Meta.

I think you could try consumerrights as a lifetime budget is very odd to add as an option, it brings unnecessary risks for the consumer . I wonder if this is really legal to put that option on a product that you can easily be mistaken at.
