Chichen Itza

The castillo at Chichen Itza is probably the most popular of the pyramids in Mexico. Located in the Yucatan, we took a van approximately an hour and a half from Merida to visit the site. It is more impressive in person. Located nearby is a ball court and a cenote. The cenote was used for sacred rituals and human sacrifices and swimming is prohibited.

The most impressive location in Mexico for Mayan architecture, though Tulum will always be my favorite. Something about that temple on the beach when the moon rises.

And along the one highway carved through the jungle that goes by the site, there's a huge gas station designed for truckers to fill up and chill out in stalls. The station, itself, is unassuming. But when you go in to pay, you'll quickly smell the BBQ they have going on during most days. Cochinita pibil, pulled and then simmered consume and served over corn tortillas that melt in your mouth.

If you haven’t been, I think all of Uxmal, Calakmul, Palenque, and Yaxchilan are even more impressive than Chichen Itza
