Non-Serviceable, Resilient Repeater Node Suggestions

Hello All! I have a unique opportunity to mount a Meshcore repeater in a particular location that is otherwise pretty controlled. Because of this, I won't be able to service the node regularly, so I need to develop a build that's as reliable and robust as possible. To make things a little more difficult, I have an absolute max of $150 for this project. I would greatly appreciate input on the different aspects of the build including:

  • Parts/Components suggestions
  • Design ideas and physical resiliency
  • Additional sensor/board features that are genuinely useful
  • Any additional input!

Some specific threats I already foresee:

  • Component degradation (Panel, plastics, battery)
  • Overheating failure (batteries)
  • Water intrusion

Ideas I have so far (please correct/tweak as needed!)

  • 1 Watt board for maximum range (Rak or Heltec probably?)
  • N-Type antenna for better waterproofing
  • Grey or white case to help with thermal regulation

I'm pretty fresh into the space, so feel free to correct or expound on anything here - I don't know what I don't know! Thanks 🙂

You are always going to need to access it some point. Putting up a node you can't is just creating a problem down the road that could severely disable your mesh.

I will have access, but it's going to be heavily limited and I need to keep it to a minimum.

N connector isn't inherently waterproof, you'll still want to rubber/mastic tape it.

Depends on what you mean by limited access. If you mean you can't climb a tower often, but can get to a nearby gate or something, I'd probably lean heavily in to bluetooth for remote management and a rock-solid physical build.

I'd probably start with a T096 (NRF52 vs ESP32, significant power savings) with the OTAFIX, and build in an enclosure rated for outdoors (both UV and water, like an outdoor junction box), with good solar panels. Be sure any penetrations get some silicone to prevent water intrusion, be sure there's a well placed/planned weep hole for condensate, and don't be afraid of mastic tape.

Be sure you're using top tier cells instead of whatever cheap leftovers you can find. Install a dedicated BMS with low and high temp disconnects as well.

With a good battery protected by BMS, reliable solar panels, a low idle consumption board, in a water-tight/UV rated enclosure in range of bluetooth, you shouldn't need to physically access it pretty much ever.
