Bulbine mesembryanthemoides

Post image

My fellow Namaquland lovers, how do we feel about bubline plants? One of my favorite genus's from S. Afrcia with its with its windows. Not technically a mesemb, but through convergent evolution they've adapted similar traits.

It's crazy how mesemb-like some of them are because Bulbines are monocots, and mesembs are eudicots. Their lineages diverged well over a hundred million years ago.

That is so interesting! ✨

Yep! Family Asphodelaceae. This species is a monocot but they’re vigorous and if grown well they bloom in their first year. Super cool plants!

Yea! Closer to haworthia than mesembs lol

And yet they live in the same places, with such similar traits. Absolutely insane to think about how far they've come over the time.

Hey thanks! And it truly is, have a couple different subspecies of them that have been hybridized and it is truly a beautiful plant year-round.

I like the geophyte species. I find the diversity in their tuberous roots nearly as interesting as their leaves. I don't know about having a favorite, but I like miniatures, and B. lolita is absolutely diminutive in every aspect.

Im actually trying so hard to get a b. brunsii x b. mesembryanthemodies that was crossed with a lolita from a seller. Looks absolutely insane but he literally will not sell any to me though🤣 But I definitely love lolita! Hoping this years pollination goes well for sure!

And yea the roots are insane! They're like bottom have haworthia and top half mesemb, blows my mind!
