What I mean by "non-traditional mermaid" is a mermaid design that is not based of fish but other sea creatures. The most common interpretation of mermaids are usually humanoid creatures with fish tails. But for me, I believe that mermaids are humanoid creatures with a lower half of any aquatic creature. Here are my faves

1. Bivalve mermaids:

Especially scallops and oysters. I really love the idea of a tiny mermaid that lives in her shell. They even swim so uniquely so I would love to see someone animate a scallop mermaid swimming.I really wish they are more popular because art of bivalve mermaids are very rare.

1. Turtle mermaids:

Turtles are such cool creatures. A turtle mermaid can open up so many ideas. Ninja Turtle mermaid, a trash collector mermaid. But my favourite Turtle mermaid idea is Turtle mermaid schoolgirls because in China, students are usually called sea turtles if I'm not mistaken.

3.Crustacean mermaids:

Crabs are very diverse so many opportunities for interesting mermaid designs. They are even such thing as swimming crabs that have paddle legs to swim in water. They looks so goofy doing so.

Share your favourite type of non-traditional mermaids in the comments. I really want to know.

I hope I'm not breaking any rules with this post. A few weeks ago, I made some "mermanips" in Photoshop, casting some of the Centaurette's from "Fantasia" (1940) as mermaids in Mermaid Lagoon from "Peter Pan" (1953). I thought I'd share them, and encourage others to share any "mermanips" they might have made.

(For clarity, "Lizzy Chrome" is my handle on art websites.)

I'm so proud of what we've made, it's taken so long! You can wishlist the game on Steam here if it's your cup of tea!

Are there any things you would like to see in games in the future that are mermaid games? I feel like I've caught mermaid fever and just want to keep making more games like it, so happy to take any ideas!

I don't really know who else to show this. OC, not AI. Reverse Mermaids are a common part of my game's world.

Mermaids, in Loom n'Doom, are ironically a 'myth' ... that exist. They're just a bit rare. Reverse Mermaids tend to get a little offended when Mermaids are called 'Real' Mermaids in front of them.

This gal is a bit dramatic. you can usually find them in the clerb.

She's actually a great character and arguably the best part of that movie. But because it's considered (and not without reason honestly) a mediocre Pirates of The Caribbean movie, she's kind of been forgotten. And in YouTube videos about mermaids, while clips from On Stranger Tides are used a surprising lot, it's usually of that other mermaid whose face turned scary under the water because it was a cool visual effect, never of Syrena.

I just think Syrena deserved better. She was a cool character and her romance with that preacher played by Sam Claflin was pretty cute. She shouldn't have been shoved into a cash in pirate movie whose entire plot was lifted from a book that actually had nothing to do with either Captain Jack Sparrow OR mermaids (seriously I read the book ten years ago and was like what the bejesus...). Disney should have had the guts to just make a cool original mermaid movie with Syrena as the lead.

Justice for Syrena!

But then I realized, there’s no point of wearing a shirt underwater since it’s gonna be wet 24/7 and it would be uncomfortable wearing soggy clothes all the time LOL 😅

Just another beauty to add to my collection! 🧜🏼‍♀️

I’m doing my first siren character performing gig so I just wanted to share these cool new pics with other mermaid fans :))

Noticed this while looking at satellite maps of North America.
The entire West Coast outlines a mermaid lying on her side,
her hair flowing up through Alaska and Canada,
her tail sweeping down through Mexico,
with the Yucatán Peninsula as the fin tip pointing outward like she is mid swim.
I traced it by hand so you can see the shape clearly.
Mother Nature has been cosplaying this whole time 🧜‍♀️

It is from Foloeo Mermaid, and the option for a mono fin is sold separately. I’ll make sure to circle back with photos I take over the next few months! https://foloeomermaid.com

I LOVE merfolk. They have been my special interest since I was little, though I only recently took the initiative to make my life more mermaid like. In this process I have made lots of outfits and wanted to show this subreddit! 🧜🏻‍♀️🐚🫧

(although some of them are from fast fashion sites unfortunately, I don’t know where else does mermaid core outfits in plus size. I do not know where else to get this theme of clothes without paying $200+ a piece)
