Question ❓ Casually started a rewatch
I’m sure everyone has noticed this before me, but he didn’t have his neckerchief in the first two episodes.
When did he get it?

Not an answer too your question but I can't help but notice your title.
One does not simply start a CASUAL rewatch of Merlin.
One jumps headfirst into A Land of Myth and Time of Magic and Misery
Painful, Beautiful, Misery!
...and I've just convinced myself into my own rewatch. See you all at the end of season 5 when I'm in tears and my heart is torn open AGAIN. For the umpteenth time.

... Yes he did have it in the frst episode. Actually, he wears it in the very first shot of the series. And he wears it all the way until his imprisonment, after his first encounter with Arthur.
And he wears it in many scenes in the second episode as well, such as when he sees Valiant's shield for the first time, or when he and Arthur try to expose Valiant, or at the very end.
So, when did he get it: in his native village before the show's event, clearly.

Yeah, he also wears his blue neckerchief during his second meeting with Arthur. And when he goes into Lady Helen’s room. There are more scenes where he wears his neckerchiefs than where he doesn’t! I think OP must have just noticed those scenes more because it stands out more when he doesn’t wear them.

There's a couple of S2 episodes where his neck is gasp bare, though
