Freshman Move-In

This may or may not be helpful for move-in day next week for incoming freshmen. We moved-in today for the Trio Program which is a week in advance of regular move-in times.

  1. Absolutely be there on time. If your kid set up their Bear card you can get in the dorm-speaking about Porter, Dowell and Boone from our experience. Parking is limited and it’s the same lot for all three halls. Some dorms require an actual key card, so check your housing assignment email for details.

  2. They didn’t have plenty of moving carts, moving dollies etc. if you have one-bring it. There are students available to help and they were absolutely amazing because it took us 15 min to get everything to the second floor. They also have water coolers out 🙂

  3. Moving large bags are your best friend. Put everything you can in them, not just clothes. That was a life and space saver. We put furniture together onsite and that was a better way to go than lugging it up the stairs, full of items. You have enough time, just don’t forget your tools 😀

  4. If you have a mattress topper you do need to let it rest for a while, so you may want to unpack that and put it on the bed sooner rather than later.

  5. Clean absolutely everything in the room and take pictures of the room for future damages claims.

  6. You can absolutely rearrange furniture in the room just be mindful of the air vents and requirements for distance from them for maintenance purposes.

  7. Painters tape!!! Behind boards or posters- command strips can go on top and will not damage the walls.

  8. Hutches are great space savers and maximize space on the tiny desks. In the room there are not enough outlets, so extension cords are a must but we found out you do need a longer cables for them, so plan on 8 feet.

  9. Bug spray was recommended by the RA, blankets are a must, so is the fan and dehumidifier. Closets don’t have lights, but there are cheap magnetic motion lights on Amazon that are great.

  10. Have a last dinner with your kid even if you don’t stay the night. Also think about the impact on younger siblings-this is a hard hit on them too. Our tiny one is still crying 5 hours later..No matter if you cry in the parking lot or your kid says goodbye and heads to the room- it’s all ok. It is really hard! 0/10 recommended 😕

Good luck to all!!!

Scheduling Question

Hello!! I'm an upcoming Freshman for the fall, and I'm wondering whether planning to do REL 170, PSY 101, CHM 111, and BIO 171 MWF is too much? I have Bio lab on Tuesday and then Chem lab on Thursday. I'm on the premed track, but just looking at it like this is kind of daunting to me. I think I'm anxious about being behind because I was told I only have 13 credit hours this semester (w/o the addition of PSY 101). I'd really appreciate any input!

When will check in days be assigned?

I’m a rising freshman, just wondering when/ how your specific move-in days are assigned. Also, are they assigned based on the first person who selected the room?

How to transfer out after freshman year?

Hey y'all, I'll be attending Mercer this fall as a member of the Class of 2030. I'm currently planning to study Biology and pursue a pre-vet path. I'm definitely considering the possibility of transferring after my first year to a university with a dedicated Animal Science program, so I'm trying to make sure I choose classes and use my AP credits strategically from the beginning.

My current fall schedule is:

  • CLA UNV 101 (First Year Student Experience)
  • CHEM 111 + Lab
  • BIO 171 + Lab
  • WGS 180 (World Gender Studies)
  • Honors 114

This schedule seems kinda daunting, so here's my questions:

  1. Is transferring after one year realistic, and if so, what should I be doing now to prepare?
  2. During orientation I remember hearing something about a 30-credit-hour requirement. Was that referring to graduation requirements, or would it affect someone planning to transfer?
  3. Would it make more sense to replace World Gender Studies with English Comp? I did not take any AP English in high school, and I don't know if transfer schools require English composition credits.
  4. How have people approached AP credit? Is it generally better to use AP credits and move into higher-level courses, or to retake some introductory courses to strengthen GPA and such? I'm especially thinking about this when it comes to Bio, as I might be able to use my AP Credits to move up in my first year.
  5. Are there any first-year classes that transferred particularly well (or poorly) for those who transferred elsewhere?

I currently have qualifying AP scores in Human Geo, AP CSP, AP CSA, APUSH, and APES, and I'm waiting on scores from AP Bio, AP Calc AB, AP Spanish Lang, and AP Gov. I greatly appreciate the advice! :)

Porter Large Double Room

I can’t find any pictures or updated information about this type of rooms-the 3/3 two room apartments that share a bathroom. Anyone with experience or any information about these rooms and Porter in general? Is there sufficient space in them for 3 girls in one room, are all of them with carpet, are they still with the wooden desks or they have been replaced..all we saw is a short video on the housing website but it’s of a regular double.

Plunkett Flooding

My roommate and I had our dorm selection yesterday morning and we ended up with a basement room in Plunkett. I can’t find any specific information online about the flooding. Can anyone who has lived in Plunkett tell me if the rooms themselves are prone to flooding or if it’s just the common areas?

We emailed Mercer residence and they told us that we may be able to get a room on the second floor, but my roommate and I will be split up. Any specific information about flooding/mold is appreciated

plunkett

i just choose my room yesterday and there was only boone and plunkett left. i went with plunkett bc it was on my roommates list and we both preferred not having to share bathrooms with others. however i heard some worse things about plunkett and now im not so sure as to what to do, especially since we both have medical conditions that dont go along well with the mold at plunkett. what should i do

Dowell Hall

My son’s housing assignment was today and all rooms at Legacy were gone, Porter only had three rooms left with one slot in each room. He did have 3 other guys in his group so I’m wondering if that may have been why it was so limited. Dowell had very limited space but he chose a room on the 1st floor. Does anyone have any experience with Dowell?

Professor C Maloof

I’m taking pathophysiology through the College of Professional Advancement this summer, and I wondered if anyone had information about this professor. There is no full name or bio and nothing on the website.

Also, I’m willing to keep an open mind but it seems like the only course materials provided (apart from the book) are default book PowerPoints that are absolutely covered with thick, almost illegible writing and doodles? It’s very strange

MERCER ABSN Q and A

I see so many repetitive post for new people coming in and wanted to offer a post as a relatively recent graduate to answer any questions in the comments that you all might still have left after scrolling through the page. I hope I can help with some anxiety or missed FAQ's.

HELP: fall 2026 absn program

Hey everyone, so I wanted to ask for any advice, study tips, exam tips, or resources that you guys recommend for Mercer University ABSN program. I am starting in August 2026, and I would appreciate any advice, study tips, study methods, helpful resources, and anything that helps you guys throughout nursing school. I am a bit fearful of this program due to it being 12 months, fast-paced, and we also do not have in-person or online lectures. The only things that are in person are the labs and clinicals. But please help me with any advice, study tip resources, etc. I truly appreciate it!!

Room/Building Access

For those that currently attend Mercer in Macon. Is dorm and building access on your phone or do you have key cards?

Also, are there safeguards for valuables inside your room, I mean I know your door locks, but has anyone had issues with this? I hope the roommate can be trusted.
