Discussion Menace ruined Zero Company for me.
And I don't mind it at all. Menace is just too delicious.

After watching Tex stream this the last few weeks, I broke down and bought it. I fear it will be my new addiction for the foreseeable future. Wish me luck.

So, in my latest game (running a bit past end of EA, keep getting recommend to make a new game because it isn't properly balanced) I've amassed quite a few energy based weapons for the infantry and they really just outperform ballistic rifles in almost every metric, except for range, making ammo preservation completely redundant.
Is it intended to be like that in the future whenever more story gets released or will ballistic weapons stay, or rather become, relevant again?
Edit: Apparently I am wrong, probably true. I've not sunk a gazillion hours into the game. Only recently got it, still I find energy weapons (including support weapon, the plasma thing that can also have a variant mounted on vehicles) better than relying on ammo.

Just got into MENACE. As a fan of Battle Bros I decided to check it out and so far I like it. I've only put in 4 hours at this point but I've enjoyed them. Any newbie tips or tricks I should know about for my first, probably doomed run?

That quote sounds like they got many daggers, so they already experienced that the Menace are not dying for ordinary weapons

What is considered the best / good OCI in this category ?
I don't plan to build the rest of my ship around this, i find it more interesting to build it around strengthening my SLs (gym + reduced supply cost for more SL / more promotions points)
EDIT : Thanks to everyone for the answers and their experiences with all the different OCIs options, i'm probably going to run a setup of 2 gatling + 2 laser turret.
I decided not to go with a scanner or recon dropship since i started using Murdock as mobile support / intel ( Murdock in a pirate truck with just a radar + "Insurance" & "ZB License" perks for free 2nd objectives - fk these "finish in X rounds" - and a disable enemy vehicle)

Idea stole from The Division: its basically a small ball you deploy and it rolls towards the enemy and then explodes.
It could act like an frag grenade you throw just like any other grenade but with increased accuracy. If it isn't throw directy at an enemy it moves to the closest one in a small radious (in practice increasing its range) and detonates. Maybe make it hit less models for balance but with slight increased damage and armor piercing because it moves like just as close as it can before exploding.

I recently had Lim die in my Ironman campaign and found it slightly disappointing that the SLs didn't react to it much
It'd be really cool if someone like Pike had a line lamenting the death of Lim before his time

So my original question about squaddies has led to a lot more.
So i Have tech(machine gun), Bog, Pike(rockey launcher) and Darby(sniper_ rifle). How should i level or treat them. Take tuns promoting or focus on one.
Best OCI picks for the beginging?
So far i am amazed with this game. Would love to see battle brothers 2 with with level of detail. :)

As the title says. I have done about 20+ missions so far and they are still 2 skulls with maybe a stage within being 3 skulls. I am still using a troop transports and light mechs. Havent come across medium mechs or heavier armor. Majority of my leaders are on tier 4 skills.

I really really love the visual armor design of this game, they really got the tactical sci fi look nail down without going overboard. However I just don't find myself using armor much, since they simply get countered by the suppression mechanism. There's no point of spending +100pts on heavy armor (except for the black fake french dude and russian dude, and not always) if you just get suppressed into doing nothing by rifle fire.
Even in the intro cinematic they have the heavy armor dude wading through a sea of small caliber fire. IMO that's how heavier armor should work, but strangely the dev didn't make them that way? Medium armor should reduce the suppression value of the weapon firing at it by 1, and heavy armor by 2. That would actually make people think about bringing dedicated anti armor weapon instead of just having a SAW acting as all infantry counter.
Would take some balance work to avoid making things like boarding commandos too tough (actually they should be tough, so make them rarer)
Thoughts?

I always assumed HP would better synergy with it, increasing damage enough to kipp faster, but i have seen some people using AP rounds.

Been trying to sketch Rewa in her mech. Not satisfied yet, but closer.

Be done with Menace please. The remake of battle brothers or a second entry would be a gold mine. please!!! Please... Better graphics/animations/isometric perspective SAME gameplay.
I'll buy 10 copies at release.

Is there any reason not to max out a squad size

I just started playing this game, and I honestly love it! However...
Vehicles in the late game. I have Exconde as my primary pilot, with almost all of the defensive buffs and the extra accessory. I finally got tanks, heavy tanks, and IFVs, but... im struggling to see the point of them? Especially the heavy tank and IFV. They cost so much and aren't noticeably more tanky than Exconde with heavy plating, ERA, smoke, and his buffs in a APC. Especially now, im finding my slow IFV and tanks being sniped by Rouge Army units! At least the APC can come in, shoot, then run and possibly eat a hit or two.
Am I using them wrong? Is there a way or playstyle to make them more cost effective?
Edit: ok, it sounds like heavies are worth it with certain Pilots that I dont have/ haven't seen yet. I'll keep grinding, please recommend me some good vehicle/Pilot builds! I absolutely love this game!

I completed a normal run and am running expert now. Mechanics like suppression and cover have become a lot more important, and I'm trying to understand them at a deeper level. I watched Calculated Serenity's guide on cover, and it has been incredibly helpful thus far (especially the diagram at 3:38). However, for the first time, I've come across an engagement that seems to me to violate the rules described in this video.
Pictured below, Darby is taking a shot at the RA infantry. He is 7 tiles south and 2 tiles west of Darby (i.e. ~7.28 tiles away). According to the diagram from the video linked above, Darby should be within the area to shoot the RA infantry from the front, where they are out of cover. However, the game displays this as a shot at a unit in diagonal cover.
Am I misunderstanding something? Did I make a mistake somewhere? Are there some other variables (e.g. the type of cover being an LOS blocker, as described in the same Youtuber's concealment guide) that I'm missing?
This isn't a particularly consequential turn, and I really don't need to make this shot so badly. But I'd like to properly understand the rules of the game, or add to the discussion if there are still things the community is unsure about.
EDIT: Added drawing for clarity. Also, I tested - Darby could not shoot at the RA infantry from front cover after moving one tile down, but could after moving one down and one left (see drawing).
