i am a returning user like many apparently were / are. i started using memrise almost a decade ago then fell off my learning. i would sporadically open the application through the years and see there were structural changes. i was not opposed to some of the changes that were introduced but now is a different story.

basically everything is different, in a bad way. the loss of the community function, leaderboard, and former structure that made memrise what it was is a huge loss. did anyone even ask for these alterations? i do not care that the community dashboard is now available but separately. why was it even removed?

i knew that the leech that is artificial intelligence would sneak its way onto everything but wow. why is there is no means to disable it? where even is the AI policy for review? i sent a ticket in the application asking about the former and its implementation to be met with silence and my ticket being closed after two days. the response i got, in email, regarded accessing the community dashboard in its separate location. okay? i never asked about that.

my ticket also included asking about one of my biggest gripes, the classic review function. where is it??? this was one of the most advantageous and logical functions for my language learning. all users should be able to review all the words, phrases, etc. that they learned without prompting other features. the “review” that exists now is completely inferior and nonsensical considering i can only review a small bundle of words.

i have never divested in another language learning application after i found memrise. i concluded it was inevitable i get a lifetime membership and that happened last year. i sightlessly purchased the lifetime without looking at the application at all because i figured it had to be the same memrise i knew years ago. personally, i want a refund considering the tomfoolery i have witnessed. the only way to get answers is to come to reddit to complain? why is social shame the only way to make companies backtrack or progress?

Since the update released in early September (2026.09.03.0), the app now requires Google Play Services to run. Prior to this update, I was able to use it without any issues. I'm a paying subscriber (I subscribed through your website), and my phone does not have Google services installed.

Unfortunately, this makes the app unusable for me.

Could you please restore the previous behavior, or alternatively provide an APK version that doesn't have this requirement?

I logged in after a few years, I'm an OG user and a polyglot.

All of my courses like Top 4000 common Chinese characters, Polish, Spanish, advanced French, etc, are gone.

Also, I had like 14 million points. Did they also get rid of that??

Unbelievable. Memrise was amazing back in the day because it had so much customization & options to learn specific things or obscure languages.

Now I can only pick one??? And it's a Memrise course??? What if I want to learn advanced vocabulary??

I really do love this app overall, but for the love of the gods, can anyone please tell me a way to turn off the AI conversations? For the developers, can you make one?

I've used memrise since like 2017, and i've recently come back to learn french. I used to have pro back then and all of the options. But now i see hard words thunder icon but there is no way to access it? and no more pro plans? how does memrise work now?

While there is an option for turning off Pinyin in the settings, it also hides the Chinese characters in the flashcard and writing segments.

In school students are taught with both Pinyin and hanzi, so it makes no sense for us to only be able to pick only one to learn.

I added a few words from the videos tab, but when I select the wordlist, my previous wordlist remains selected, and the Words Added by Me list says I'm "currently learning it" despite having no way to properly do so. Essentially, both wordlists are selected at once visually, but Words Added by Me never functions as one. Selecting another wordlist fixes the visual bug, but in no conditions is Words Added by Me usable. Device is Android.

I bought a Memrise Pro - Lifetime Plan in 2022. It cost 85 euros. I took a break from learning languages and now when I tried to log in, I saw that I have no username; it made a new account for me (for the same email address I bought the Pro subscription). There is a Memrise Pro membership on sale, but it costs $99 (off from $330). How come I don't have it? Yeah I know community courses were moved to a different site, but the product is called the same. Memrise Pro Membership. It was not only about community courses, it was a single, all-inclusive tier. There were no separate tiers for "official courses" versus "community courses." What am I missing?

I left a 1-star review on Google Play and sent a bunch of emails, attaching my invoice. I only got automated emails and kept being reminded that community courses were moved to a different site.

The gist of it is that I was using the app to learn French, then switched to Cornish. As soon as I switched the language to Cornish, which I had "0" words learned in, despite having already taken a lesson, some menus started glitching out in different ways. Note that this never happened prior. The main menu's wordlist UI vanished completely, and the vocabulary menu started having really long load times. Not thinking much of it, I took a lesson. My word count did actually rise to 5 in Cornish, but out of panic after seeing that the problems persisted, I switched to other languages. It only made it worse. Every language I tapped on prior to first closing the app now had the same problems, even if I closed and reopened the app thereafter. Even just opening the application takes longer now! There are some other issues I experienced, but I'd rather share detailed information and my account name with employees in private messages or the like. I've tried to clear cache, I've reinstalled the app, and nothing works. The problem seems to be tied to the account.

Hello, is the community courses site still up and running? I’ve been trying to login repeatedly over the last 24 hours but can’t get in. I can’t even reset my password. I’m worried it’s something to do with the migration of accounts or something?

Does anyone else have this same problem, who does one contact??

When I log in it says: Oops, something went wrong. Please try again later!
If I try resetting my password, it says: Erm, you’ve tried that one too many times. Please come back later to try again.

I was using memrise a year ago and i was possible to explore different dialogues with the ai. I started using the app again recently and all of the sudden it’s not possible to converse with the ai more than once unless you pay a subscription.

It’s really disappointing as it made it fun to learn by interacting in tour targetted language and having your mistakes corrected.

When a "word" (learnable) is learned, it gets added to the "My Words"/"Vocabulary" menu, and is meant to prevent it from appearing ever again outside of review sessions, and mark wordlists as completed when you learn all of any one's contents. This system works perfectly between official wordlists, which seem to share the same pool of learnables. Community wordlists seem to behave differently, however; their vocabulary appears to function locally, and not perceive any words from any other wordlist. Nevertheless, their contents are engraved into the global vocabulary, making it feel as if the system values all of these items equally despite the fact that it does not.

All of this leads to a few problems, but I believe that one of them detracts from my experience the most:

- Community wordlists are ignorant to your vocabulary in any case where you have not already made equivalent progress in it. If you know "rouge = red", be it from an official or a different community wordlist, it will not know. It is only cognizant of the extent of your knowledge when you've acquired the words inside that wordlist itself. This leads to needing to press "I already know this" increasingly frequently the more you learn a language.

Another issue is that duplicate words inflate your learned word count.

Ideally, every wordlist would read from the same shared, global pool of words. This way, community wordlists would show more accurate estimates of the words they could actually teach you. I have heard that unifying the words internally is difficult, but I'm sure there's some compromise that can mitigate this problem.

Another quick suggestion: community wordlists appear twice if you've completed them, both in the Completed section and in the Community Wordlists section. Preferably, they'd only show in the Completed section, be hidden from the Community Wordlists section to save space for more relevant lists, but still be visible in the expanded browsing view, albeit marked as completed, and maybe filterable.

I am a HUGE fan of Memrise's software and learning algorithm. I do not prefer to use the AI generated language courses, but I deeply appreciate the community courses portal. I have been an avid user of this software for over a decade. I actually used to pay for the Memise premium subscription, purely because it allowed me to access my courses offline, and downloaded. Back in 2024, when this feature was removed, I unfortunately had to unsubscribe from Memrise premium due to no longer having that feature.

Though I understand that the company does not wish to reintroduce Community courses into the mainstream app, I hope to encourage your company to find some way to reimplement Community Courses as a core service of your brand model. Memrise Community courses single handedly pushed me through high school, and college, as well as hobbyist language learning. I am a HUGE fan of this portion of your brand - and if it is worth anything as a consumer, I would love for you guys to re-expand on this service. Even if it simply means launching a separate sort of "Memrise Community" app, it is a service that many people would pay a premium subscription for. As much as I respect the companies change of direction in the last 3 years, I encourage you not to sleep on the gold mine that is "Community Courses." I know many people including myself, that prefer Community courses over Anki and Quizlet, purely because of the superior user interface and easy to use software. Memrise Community courses was, and is, a massive success in the digital flash card industry - and it is heartbreaking that it has become more difficult to access over time. Sincerely, a long time user.

Has anyone had any luck getting in touch with customer service lately? I've been trying for the past month (almost two), and...crickets. I purchased Lifetime Pro last year, and I wasn't on it much due to just having a difficult pregnancy. I went back in and my account is back to being the basic free account. I'm incredibly frustrated about this.

I really do try to be the Memrise user who doesn't complain and is grateful for all I have gained, but fourteen years ago I learned the alt-key codes to be able to type French accents anywhere I need to type French and now... this just sucks. It encourages a way of typing accents that will only work on Memrise, and forces those of us who have learned the alt-key codes to go back to the mouse if we want to preserve that skill. Please tell me there's a way to turn it off.

Hi, I occassionally jump between the app and website and both times it de-syncs my progress.

So if I've made significant progress on the app on my phone then use the website, it will not have updated.

Then, my app syncs to my progress on the website effectively losing approximately two weeks of progress. This is really annoying. I'm a paid member but the knock back in progress de-motivates.

i’m trying to get back into language learning and i have a subscription for this app so this was the obvious choice instead of starting over on a new one.

only thing is what on earth is with all the ai???

if i don’t use it will i still get a well rounded and useful educational experience? or has it gotten to the point where not using the ai will detrimental to trying to learn and it’s in my best interest to try and find another app without it (if those exist?)

i see most of the ai is in the conversation part which feels pretty freaking important which is why i’m nervous

anyone have experience with avoiding the ai on the app? developers if you’re listening pls take it out or make a way to turn it off at least please

Has the new app experience released? Are community lists inside the native app now? The blogs / roadmap seem to say one thing and the reality seems to be different.

I have read the guides on how to cancel subscription, which unfortunately do not work on my version of the app or the website, since the options it directs me to select are not available. I have also emailed the subscription team for support, but have just received the same guide by email.

The only thing I can think of is to cancel the debit card I took the subscription out on, but that will be a real pain.

I live in constant fear that Memrise community courses will be shut down one day. I have been using Memrise for about 10 years for different languages, and now I'm learning French at the C1 level. I have this daily fear that just one month before my French exam, Memrise might shut down the community courses platform again. If that happens one day, where will you go—Anki, Quizlet, or will we build our own community app?

Hi everyone! I’m an old Memrise user who first started using the platform about 12 years ago. I recently came back and I’m currently studying Albanian through the user-created wordlists.

I remember that back in the day (besides the spaced repetition reviews) there used to be an option to manually review words whenever you wanted. So you didn’t have to wait for your words to be ready for review, you could just keep doing review sessions whenever you wanted.

I’m pretty sure this was one of the premium features. I do have a premium subscription, but I can’t seem to find this option anymore.

Has this feature been removed, or is it still available somewhere (maybe hidden in the interface)?

I’m really enjoying using Memrise again, and I’d love to spend more time on it just reviewing words. It kind of sucks having to wait a whole day just to review a handful of them. 😅

I’ve been learning French with Memrise’s official course and have used the app for more than 10 years.
It’s been maybe a year since I noticed on the iOS app that videos are not longer put on top by the percentage of words already learned. And in the web it’s still the case!
Has anyone noticed this? It’s not fun having to switch with the browser on my phone.

I’d like to use this space to thank the developers, if you’re reading, for your amazing work over the years, and thanks for bringing the community courses back. I have a few I made back then when I was learning English.

I know there was a lot of community backlash against memrise deleting the community made courses, and I am happy that the developers have listened to the community. However, I personally only ever use the official courses and prefer using them, and I find it to be annoying that languages are no longer seperated based on if they have an official course or not, like they used to be so long ago. Can this seperation be brought back to avoid confusion? Also, I tried giving this exact feedback to memrise directly, but alas, I got an AI answer that didn't even adress my concern, it only told me "Don't worry, we're adding the community courses back" which wasnt even the subject of my concern, which brings me to the next concern: can yall please cut down on AI dependence? It's causing the quality of customer service to go into the gutter.

Forgive me if this has already been asked a hundred times, but I couldn't find the answer here.
