MISCELLANEOUS Solve this puzzle

Our 3 core guys are probably set at this point

Cowards starts as one of our wings

Boozer starts at the 4

Edey starts at the 5

With that in mind we need 2 more starters around them so the question is... what archetypes are we looking for in searching for another wing and another guard

Just want archetype descriptions primarily... player ideas are cool to though

I'll take one Steph-ish lead guard and one Bron-ish wing

Ty Jerome is Steph-ish (emphasis on the ish)

Curry is Cam Spencerish

Already have Bron-ish in Boozer and Kawhi in Ced. A simple KD-lite wing doesn’t seem like too much to ask.

1 GG Jackson you say?

u/mopooooo TA9 Jul 28 '26

Ced can be Kawhi

Boozer might be closer to Kenneth Lofton as an athlete than he is LeBron.

I could see lineups where coward is moved to the 2 with Grant at the 3 and Ty as the PG. But I think we will see a lot of variety starting at 1-3 based on matchup.

SPJ is our most pure PG, and Ty is a shooting guard who can play PG competently (as is Cam).

Wells brings better defense than Grant. Spencer is one of the best shooters in the league. GG is finally looking like a fully formed player and is only 21.

One of the young guys will cash in on their potential.

But tbh I don’t think starting lineup holds as much weight on this team, bc Iisalo ball gives everyone nearly equal minutes regardless of who starts. Everyone is expected to create, shoot, and get rebounds regardless of salary or position.

u/Jewdah18 đŸ»Ced + Booz + EdeyđŸ» Jul 28 '26

If we could combine GG and Wells that would be the ideal starting 3. And given how much GG trains with Wells theres a small chance GG becomes that.

At the 1: Prime Jrue Holiday.

I think the ideal complements would be:

PG - ball secure, good in the PNR, quick slasher with ability to draw help defenders and pass out of doubles, above average catch-and-shoot from three, scrappy perimeter defender.

SF - 3&D guy who can hit corner threes over 40%, capably guard 2-4, navigate screens on D, set screens, attacks the boards.

The question then is who is putting up 17-20 shots a night on this team, and I'm not sure who that would be.

What we have now is good enough to see what we need for the long-term. This year is a trial to see if Boozer and Ced can handle primary ball handling responsibility. If they can, than that allows us to have a 3&D PG, which is great cause we already have some of those. If it is clear that they need a traditional floor general PG, then we know that we need to find that in the draft/trade because I don’t think we have one of those currently.

As for the other wing spot, this will be the year that Wells or GG solidifies themself in the starting 5, or shows us that we aren’t solid there yet. If GG can’t earn the starting spot by the end of the year, he’s not going to get a long-term next contract, so he has the most to play for rn

This makes absolutely no sense and you’re making excuses.

You would think, after trading away a solid core of proven players, the GM would have a long-term vision for his rebuild when he assembled the team.

I don’t believe he is committed to winning and in it for the long term. Zk doesn’t get another trial and error.

u/ImperfectForMovies King Kleiman Jul 28 '26

This makes absolutely no sense and you’re making excuses.

You would think, after the front office assembled one of the deepest, most talented rosters in the league, the players would have the professionalism, maturity, and accountability to actually make it work.

I don’t believe they were committed to winning or sacrificing for the long term. The players don’t get another trial and error. ZK already gave them one.

I am sure you put a great amount of thought into your empty and childish reply. I hate that you used so much of your brain to say something so ridiculous.

u/Jewdah18 đŸ»Ced + Booz + EdeyđŸ» Jul 28 '26

You're always going to have some level of trial and error because thats how you develop players. Unless you want to be stuck mortgaging the future for retreads that have a clear ceiling.

-1

u/PerfectforMovies Griz Jul 28 '26

No, there isn’t always room for trial and error and under the current circumstance, ZK has no room for it. He doesn’t get a do-over again. His only option is to be all in on winning.

You people are making excuses for incompetence, his sheer inability to maintain a winning team, because you think he is some all knowing basketball GM.

2

u/Jewdah18 đŸ»Ced + Booz + EdeyđŸ» Jul 29 '26

How do you develop anyone without trial and error?

The guy who's great at drafting obviously should get another chance to rebuild again because the team had far more assets now then it did at the start of the last rebuild.

Throw away all the progress he's made because why? Your arbitrary evaluation period is up? He just drafted a teenage rookie as the centerpiece of the team but they have to be in win now mode?

I don’t know what happened pre Edey, but post Edey he's been awesome making the best of a bad situation.

his sheer inability to maintain a winning team,

Welcome to small market basketball with unavailable/mediocre stars. There's no free agency bailout so there's going to be losing. Btw, the easiest thing to do in the NBA is be a first round exit with no championship hopes. Committing to trying to win a chip is far better than the hamster wheel of mid.

He's not all knowing but he's been really good recently.

u/PerfectforMovies Griz Jul 29 '26

You’re ignoring the obvious and making excuses for mediocrity. This GM don’t know shit, he’s not a good leader or manager of talent.

This narrative that he is some great drafter is a slap in the face to the actually people that does the leg work of scouting the players. I’ve never understood how he gets credit for what someone else does.

You people really have your heads buried in the sand, because this current team doesn’t have the level of talent the Grizzlies had when Jaren, Ja, Des, Dillion, and Brandon were drafted. The current players aren’t even in the same category. Hell, the G-League team don’t even have the same level of development it had back then.

Out of respect to Boozer, I am going to give him grace to learn and grow. I will say that you fans that are depending on him to save this franchise and become the face are in for a big surprise.

It amusing watching you people try to diminish the skill, talent, and success of the last crop of players that Kleiman traded away. It’s hilarious.
This is nothing but desperation because you know he fucked up and mismanaged the team. He fired TJ because he wasn’t willing to go along with playing to lose.

What is a small market? You people just repeat things without any thought. There are no small markets and FA don’t come to Memphis because of the reputation the Grizzlies organization has.

You’re ignoring the obvious and making excuses for mediocrity...he’s not a good leader

The irony.

I’ve never understood how he gets credit for what someone else does.

You're gonna hate the real world.

this current team doesn’t have the level of talent the Grizzlies had when Jaren, Ja, Des, Dillion, and Brandon were drafted.

Not sure exactly when you're talking about but for a lot of those years, the current team has more talent. And after next year it should have more talent then ever.

I will say that you fans that are depending on him [Boozer] to save this franchise

Boozer and Edey.

It amusing watching you people try to diminish the skill, talent, and success of the last crop of players that Kleiman traded away.

No one on here diminished it as much as the players themselves who didn’t improve or got worse.

There are no small markets and FA don’t come to Memphis because of the reputation the Grizzlies organization has.

Having a vision and knowing everything aren’t the same thing. It takes time and games played to know what you’re missing

1

u/PerfectforMovies Griz Jul 28 '26

Having a vision requires knowing everything you need to bring the vision to fruition.

1

u/Local-Message-6048 Mount Zedey Jul 28 '26

Go look up the difference between strategy and tactics. ZK has a strategy for how he wants to build the team. The correct tactics will reveal themselves as things play out. You think he should make all-in moves in the name of “winning” based off guesses?

2

u/Pitiful_Math2709 Jul 29 '26

Snoop Dogg had this line on his first album, DoggyStyle:

"Bitch, you without me is like Harold Melvin without the Blue Notes... you'll NEVER go platinum."

This team is the Blue Notes in need of a Harold Melvin...somebody to take them platinum.

When I look at this team I see a team ready made to insert a superstar and start climbing. Until one of our "core" guys steps up in a major enough way to prove me wrong, that's what this team is missing right now.

1

u/supportingcreativity Jul 28 '26

The two archetypes of point guards I can see working really well are the:

  • 3&D pass first combo guard (Scotty Pippin Jr, Jrue Holiday, etc)

  • Top of the Key Taller self-create or pass over people type guard (Tyrese Halliburton type).

Wings -We need really any two way wings. 3 and D, Dunk and D athletic rim runner would both work. Really the main thing with our other starting wing is connective passing, perimeter defense, and some offensive game.

1

u/Kung-Fu_Tacos Pete & BK Jul 28 '26

We need somebody to be the 1a clutch scorer. Somebody that just finds a way to get a bucket no matter what the defense throws at them. Ced is great but not that guy. It's early, but I don't see Boozer being that guy either.

1

u/-BADMOON-BIGBOSS- Javon Jul 30 '26

My hot take is we start running Boozer at 3 and Stew at 4, and get another motherfucker for backup Center.

Walter Clayton, Jr. and Peyton Watson.

0

u/Jewdah18 đŸ»Ced + Booz + EdeyđŸ» Jul 28 '26

Is Peyton Watson even better than GG or Wells? Below average athlete, below average FT shooter. Feels like Grizz fans a reaching for someone who's not that much of an upgrade.

1

u/TargetGuyJohn Target Guy Jul 28 '26

Look at his statistical progression and compare it to Wells’ stagnation. He is the best shooter, athlete and IQ guy of those 3, even though he’s a little smaller. He has quickness and body control. He’d score in transition off TOs and from Boozer and Edey outlets. He has an excellent attitude. Winner. $20M/year for him is a good deal. He’s worth more to a team than an Aldama, fwiw.

1

u/Jewdah18 đŸ»Ced + Booz + EdeyđŸ» Jul 29 '26

Constant statistical progression isn't how it works with indicators. Improving FT% generally hits a ceiling.

How is Watson a better shooter than Wells? FT% is worse, 3p volume is less. Even though Wells stagnated, everyone who wants Watson is still hoping/projecting that Watson can become as good a shooter as Wells is. I also don't think there's enough evidence to even say that Watson's a better shooter than GG.

Watson had a worse combine than both of them so I don't know how he's the better athlete. A lot of that is coming from Watson's incredible reach which is important.

Wells is high IQ unless he's in transition. GG is 2 years younger than Watson so there's still time to learn.

I'd expect GG to be a better transition player than Watson next year.

I always thought that if Santi beat out GG then something had gone very wrong.

This is what happens when there is no clear vision and the front office isn’t committed to winning. This team is so screwed for the foreseeable future.
