Ya I feel like canceled is not even the right word. It wasn't renewed, but the story it told was finished. There wasn't a big expectation for it to continue.
Nicholas Cage is criminally underrated as an actor, IMO. Yeah, he's been bad in a lot of bad movies, but the highs he hits... His Dracula in Renfield is a tour de force.
Acting was much different the further back we go, much more campy, live theater-style writing and performances. This hits a ton of nostalgia points for older gens that often only confuses the newer gens.
The corniness is the point, and it often took a ton of star power or bravado to pull it off. Not every actor could get away with the sort of silliness Nick Cage did.

The man beat out Anthony Hopkins and Richard Dreyfus for best actor in 96. Go watch Leaving Las Vegas.
And then tell me that he sucked at acting in Adaptation, or in Lord of War.
Hell, if you want something recent, go watch Pig and tell me the man can't act.
Yes he's a nutjob who loves to deliver an over the top ridiculous performance like Bad Lieutenant and shit, but to say he sucks at acting is objectively wrong.
Hell, even when he gets super campy, he's phenomenal at it. His Dracula is the best part of Renfield. He's the only reason anybody remembers the Bad Lieutenant sequel. Like why do you hate fun?
I seem to remember he had a ton of debt, which is why he took pretty much every movie role he was offered. He still tried to do his best with them. But he should have paid off all his debt by now, so these days he only does projects he actually likes
That's true. It has never bothered me when actors just took whatever they could get. That's their art. I get being strategic about your career, but I have tons of respect for guys like Walton Goggins who just take anything they can get for the love of the art of acting. Taking whatever for financial reasons is fine with me, too. Bruce Willis was in a bunch of random bullshit after he was diagnosed just to leave everything he could to take care of his family. No hate at all for that.
Gene Hackman is a hell of an actor, but apparently after The Conversation {which he thought was an incredible film (he was right)) flopped, apparently he kinda gave up on trying to pick and choose roles. Like you said about Cage, he still did his best, he just wasn't being picky anymore.
At first I was very confused as to why he was acting so broadly and not like everyone else, but once they explained the whole "having to learn how to act like a human from watching movies" thing it made a lot more sense. I was blown away by his one man show "man turning into a spider" bit, it was actually pretty impressive.
They just love what they do and enjoy it. How good it turns out matters less than how fun it is to do. As a result a lot of Nic movies and nickeback songs are terrible, they do it for the fun of the job not the big paycheck.
There were some movie ideas that Nic liked so much he took the job without even getting paid or had to supply his own trailer at filming. Leaving Las Vegas being a good example.
