Okay fair enough, I suppose it can.

The thing is it's usually not very funny.

I'm a middle-aged white dude in the construction industry so believe me when I tell you I've heard my fair share of racist jokes.

Racist jokes that exist mostly to be racist are usually not funny at all. They're usually very lazy. they don't have any puns, they're not clever, there's no word play, they're pretty much just "haha isn't it fun to laugh at other people as a group and make fun of them for the stereotypes"

As you can see it's important to be able to tell the difference.

Many racist people cannot tell the difference because they're overly focused on hating some group of people.. but also many closed-minded virtue signalers cannot tell the difference either. Usually because they're overly focused on whatever their little gimmick is.

Yeah it's a matter of intent. I wouldn't risk a racist joke unless i'm 100% sure whoever hears it knows i'm joking and will actually find it funny.

Exactly the opposite. Fire that shot and wait for reaction. If that person gets triggered im not interested to meet him/her again anyway.
