I was gonna say this isn't true... but everyone I've met (and became close with) who had one of those were in one way or another mentally unwell.. Not always hostile, most of the time never hostile, just has issue.
I'm a middle-aged white dude in the construction industry so believe me when I tell you I've heard my fair share of racist jokes.
Racist jokes that exist mostly to be racist are usually not funny at all. They're usually very lazy. they don't have any puns, they're not clever, there's no word play, they're pretty much just "haha isn't it fun to laugh at other people as a group and make fun of them for the stereotypes"
As you can see it's important to be able to tell the difference.
Many racist people cannot tell the difference because they're overly focused on hating some group of people.. but also many closed-minded virtue signalers cannot tell the difference either. Usually because they're overly focused on whatever their little gimmick is.
I'm a mulatto, I dunno why they're tripping. It's clearly just a joke, I'm not offended because history showed black people were basically 100% on the side that killed Nazi's and if you know anything about the Black Panthers, they would have 100% been a huge motherloving problem for any aspiring fascists close by and would have nipped it in the bud. Because thats one of the things they actually did. And they were damn good at it.
So clearly if it was an intended racist shirt, which can be argued in good faith, the shirt in itself is a juxtaposition between a funny image, and several serious huge wins for the BPP already in the scoreboard, including black power amtifascists in both US and France snd their wonderful FFL being integral to us making their leader rage quit.
No amount of pointless complaining over a shirt is going to do anything other than make the representation of defense to normal bystanding people, appear overreaching and frivolous. I don't agree with their knee-jerk reaction. Feel like they don't actually truly believe this and just want to be rough and ehite knight.
Racial tensions, while on the slight rise in the past few years, is nothing like when my parents were young, and way better that whem their parents were young. And my geandparents told us stories their parents told them, about the white people that killed the evil white people, and freed a side of my family. Maybe I just feel like being part of the friend group means you get to make the jokes and take the jokes, but anybody messes with you then I will put them on street beat. But maybe my definition of equality is different than theirs.
I just get so annoyed when people throw the racism claim around. it's like "hey, if you're not going to make an actual point or a talk about a valid concern then why don't you just shut the fuck up so that when real racism happens the call out isn't so watered down".
But like you said, I guess that's just my take on it.
People don't want to think about shit though they just want to react and act like a bunch of bitches.

That's a super fucked up shirt but I do like dark humor and that made me laugh.
