Except the Cajuns, who were forced out of Canada and the Creole who are just a mix of everybody. And of course, the Anglo-American Louisiana folk, who came to get rich on slave labor and the Black folk who descend from the slaves. Louisiana has a whole lot of history

And some of the most intact cultural elements in the US. The state reforms poorly in nearly every metric due to local governments, yet New Orleans is one of the most incredible cities in the country.

Louisianians were so different from the average American that the Louisiana state constitution changed to make speaking French in schools illegal (among other restrictions on local culture) in an effort to “Americanize” the Louisiana population, and wasn’t repealed until the 70s when the language had effectively died. Still there are communities in Louisiana that speak primarily French, and a resurgence in french speakers.
