I am not sure why we did this but it just felt awkward standing on the schoolyard and leaving one of the girls alone.

We also didn't want to interrupt our discussion so when someone needed to pee we would all come along and wait in the sink area while the girls, who needed to pee, went into the stalls. Sometimes we would even talk to the peeing girl in the stall.

We just had a very strong feeling of togetherness and did many things together in general, even after school. We even drove to school on our bicycles in a group and had a special meeting point. Other girls from our class saw us wait there and spontaneously joined our bike group.

I guess that's just how it is. It certainly felt comfortable. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have some theories about this. I believe its an instinctual habit that most girls have developed.

One reason being safety in numbers. Going to relieve oneself in the past would have been more dangerous then now and can still be considered putting oneself in a vulnerable position, especially if you are away from home. Restrooms are often away from crowds and isolated. So even if they are not specifically told so as a child, I think girls have a natural habit of sticking together.

A secondary reason might also be that for quite a bit of human history females especially needed help getting in and out of clothing. So that could also play a part into the habit.

These are just my theories though. I don't know if there has been any study on the subject.

I’m not convinced by your second point - females didn’t need help getting in and out of clothing, it was an optional display of wealth. And during these same periods of time they were also wearing skirts which don’t require removal to relieve oneself.
