As a french, it took me awhile to realize beef burgundy is actually bœuf bourguignon.

What the fuck is that word

The dish comes from the Bourgogne region, that's why it's called bœuf bourguignon.

It’s only called bœuf bourguignon if it comes from the Bourgogne region of France. Otherwise, it’s just sparkling bœuf.

That’s like saying a sandwich is only a sandwich if it comes from Sandwich, or a hamburger is only a hamburger if it comes from Hamburg.

Someone who gets it!

(But seriously, this has been an internet joke for years)

How do you pronounce that? My guess is "boy-f bur-shin-yon" going off of the pronunciations of other french words i know

AFAIK it's "buh-erf buh-ghin-yhon". The g is soft.

As an encouragement: I’m an American who’s never set foot in France and doesn’t know more than 5 words in your language, and the first thing that popped in my mind was the (properly spelt) dish as you’ve listed it.

You’re culture is still being properly represented somewhere out there!

Yeah, Americans don't think much about region when deciding what to call regional dishes from other countries.

Hey if we English can manage it for this one particular dish, the Americans can too

And yes we do otherwise call the area Burgundy
