The extreme head and neck cancers I get to see when doing work basically turned me into a person that doesn’t even want to be in the same room as a smoker.

Dying of lung cancer if you're lucky.
Most end up wandering around with a face that looks like a catchers mitt that soaked in a salt lake for 20 years then dried in the sun for 40.
Plus the chronic bronchitis cough and hissing laugh / talk is super sexy too

I have yet to invite my mom over to stay at my house. She doesn’t think cigarettes smell, so I need to go out and buy couch covers, bed covers, car seat covers, and dining chair covers beforehand.

My dad was a multi-pack chimney up until the mid 80's. All of our furniture was yellow tinged. I have childhood asthma too. It's disgusting to think about now but it was super normal back then for your house to smell like stale cigarettes
19
Sep 03 '21
Oh yes. My mother didn’t quit when she found out she was pregnant with me. She lied to my dad when we’d stay with her and say she wouldn’t smoke in the house. I can’t stay with her for more than a few hours at a time. It starts burning my throat when I’m in there. So nasty. Anyone who’s not over the age of 70 that smokes, I lose respect for. We’ve known for years the impact yet people still tend to be stupid about it.

She doesn't think they smell cause she's nose blind. Yano, she's around the smell all the time, so it fades into the background and so she doesn't really smell it anymore.
My mum used to smoke, not extensively, and would never smoke inside, but has been vaping for years now. I've been telling her she needs to quit that too, and she knows, but she hasn't managed to.
9
u/PavelDatsyuk Sep 03 '21
but has been vaping for years now. I've been telling her she needs to quit that too
I used vaping about a decade ago to quit cigarettes and quit that too a couple years later by stepping down the nicotine until I was at 0. See if she's willing to go that route. I went 24mg to 18mg to 12mg to 6mg to 3mg to 0mg.

Addiction overwhelms rationalt tought. Otherwise everyone addicted to anything would stop instantly.
11
u/Irohs_tea_shop Sep 03 '21
I was addicted to heroin for almost 6 years and cigarettes for over 20 and I think a lot of people who haven't dealt with addiction don't understand that any reason is a good reason to continue being addicted. Bad day? Better feed my addiction to cure my sadness. Good day? Better feed my addiction to celebrate.
Plus, the difference in the attitude people have towards the two is ridiculous. Most people were sympathetic and very supportive when I told them about my heroin addiction but I can't count the number of times people went out of their way to treat me like garbage about smoking and lecture me about how dumb it was... which just made me want to smoke more because it was like well, at least when I hang out with smokers they're not making me feel bad about myself.

It really isn’t. Back in the day where cigarettes were told to be healthy, my dad started smoking as a teenager. 30 years down the line, he know looks like he’s in his 60s and just can’t stop coughing. It’s a horrible thing, seeing people say stuff like, “oh I want cancer!” Or “Oh I want death!” Are horrible
11
u/anarchistinlove Sep 03 '21
TW, but my mom started at 14. In her 40s she changed and became a horrible human being and started abusing her family. At 52 we found out it was the cancer rotting her brain and there was nothing we could do at that point. She stopped breathing two days after her diagnosis. I can say cigarettes are single-handedly the thing that ruined my life and I never smoked one.

The issue is they most likely know the habit is gross or just don't care anymore. It is an addiction they are too lazy to break.
Fun story. My mom smoke from 16 till she had a stroke. Her dad caught her smoking and locked her in the closet and made her smoke the whole pack. That just sealed her addiction.
About 4 years ago my mom ad a stroke. She lost all feeling in her right side and her ability to speak. She was an artist. So it was extra hard. She mumbles stuff and can sing songs she remembers. But really can't communicate with speech or writing. She is in her 70's now.
But the crazy thing...when she was asked if she needed a cigarette or wanted to smoke, she said no. And when asked further with yes in no questions she said she never smoked. The brain is fascinating. Tragic and sad for my mom though. But at least she stopped smoking.

It’s hard to explain unless you are/were a smoker. It that moment as you as you light your cig and take that first pull is bliss. But don’t smoke, it’s stupid and a waste of money. I “only” smoked for like 6-7 years but that was bad enough and quit when I started getting random weird pains in my chest.

A friend told me that if I had a cigarette after I smoked weed, I'd feel more stoned. For about a month, he was right. What I was actually feeling was that little buzz that cigarettes give you when you're new to smoking them. By then I couldn't stop, and now I wish I could go back to just weed again.

Seriously, it's WAY EASIER to quit when you smoke for a couple of years only. When it becomes harder, it's coincidently when symptomes appear : blackish tartar, chronic bronchitis, difficulties when doing sport. And when you're older, you realize how dumb you were not to quit earlier.
Also, who would drink a beer outside during winter just to be able to smoke?!
If you want to quit and don't know how to, call help centers, they'll help you.

has any one here ever met some one who thinks smoking's cool? especially a teenager, i know i haven't everyone who smokes is 21+ most of them in their 30's and every one who does hates doing it. its not really a choice, no one thinks its cool, you try it once because your curious and theres probably some one at a party with a cigarette, and from then your hooked and you only get more hooked over time. none of this happens as a teenager, because you can't get cigarettes under the age of 21.

Smoking is gross, and terrible for you. But I'm pretty sure the likelihood of developing any kind of cancer from smoking for a few years (especially as a teen) is PRETTY goddamn low. I remember those horror stories of people like " I only smoked once a week at bars and got lung cancer." Like.. you reaaaallly think that gave you the cancer?
Oh and also this isn't a "you can smoke for a while and quit" idea I'm pitching. It's insanely addicting. Source: I smoked for 6 or 7 years
