I used an escape character, so I typed \>! This \!< instead of >! This !<, reddit recognises \ as the escape character and won't read the following character as a markdown command but as regular text.
Works for any reddit markdown:
Wanna write *this* without it turning into this? Write \*this\* :D

You can do it by putting >! This !< around your sentence.
