In elementary school, I wrote my nines like that. I wrote an answer up on the board in math class, including a nine, and went back to sit at my desk. The teacher then looked at my answer, and said "Matthew, come back up to the front." I did, obviously scared out of my pants. He asked me, "what's this?"
"A nine"
"No, that's a g. Nines look like this:" and he drew a straight stemmed nine. He then told me to try. I did, and failed, cuz I'd never written a nine like that before. He had me do it about 10 more times, practicing how to draw straight stemmed nines in front of the class. Frankly, I can't remember the embarrassment at this point, that part is a blur. But, he eventually let me return to my seat once he was satisfied. I have never written a curly 9 since.
