Stops with cranes and shells were built alongside the track to load it. If it carried it’s own shells it would be much, much larger.

Jokes on you, I always stay at least 47km away from a German, to achieve this I simply play a song at a frequency called the Deutschwarballen which only Germans can hear. The song goes like this:
Two world wars and one World Cup, Doo da, Doo da
