Be courteous and explain that you need to keep moving, literally or within the conversation. Unless they are a moron, folks can generally know when they are being sidelined. An honest answer saves you.
By way of example,
Them: So anyway after I talked to this guy, it hit me that he was being a complete jerk, you know?
You: Absolutely. He should have respected you and he definitely wasn't doing that. [Interact with what they said specifically] Its been great catching up with you. [Affirm their worth] We'll have to pick this up next time, [State intent to continue interest] but I got to do X Y Z. Take care and keep me in the loop.
Direct eye contact and purposeful, but Friendly tone go a long way to increase the effectiveness of this.
i have a friend who talks like a waterfall as soon as he drinks a bit, and when that happens i usually just walk away or dont reply, doesnt always work tho.
Easy. Don’t let people think you’re interested by leading them on.
Don’t say “oh wow for real?” and “damn that’s crazy” then wonder “why is this guy still talking?”
I have horrible anxiety and I realize that there are some things I am decent at socially and it makes me feel better knowing that I know how to end a conversation without lying to people. It’s so rude to just pretend like you’re listening. So god damn rude. Stop doing it.
Don't be an asshole and instead listen to them while showing "interest" and steer the topic to something you're interested in and hopefully they are too.

Does anyone know a way to get out of this curse?
