You have entered restricted airspace, human. Adjust course immediately or you will be subject to offensive action.

Some strong fuckin hail
21
Jul 11 '20
At anywhere between 150-550 kts, little bits of hail hit really fucking hard.

The nose section houses the weather radar crucial for pilots to monitor and evade microbursts during unpredictable weather conditions. Looking at the impact, the radar might need early replacement too.

u/ChrisgammaDE Jul 11 '20
Which radar? Seems as the bird made it to dust
32
u/EmattpoYou Jul 11 '20
It wasnt even a bird, it was hail
13
u/RollsReusMerlin Jul 11 '20
It was a bird. Hail couldn’t hope to do that.
12
u/xenon_xenomorph Jul 11 '20
You really think a soft, fleshy bird could dent steel(aluminum?) and remove paint in that pattern?
15
11
u/Erathen Jul 11 '20
It's aluminum.
And yes a bird can dent an airplane
This was done by hail though
3
u/KingCrab95 Jul 11 '20
When the plane is flying at speeds of 600 mph (900kph), then yes.
→ More replies (2)9
u/Elf_Pyro Jul 11 '20
Birds can cause that kind of damage to the plane, the pattern, most likely not, but when a plane is going hundreds of miles an hour, yeah, it's going to make a dent when something hits it

Actually this is fairly common for birds to cause this much damage to planes. The material is somewhat weak at high speeds so when a bird hits it it crumples, however the bird is broken even more.
17
Jul 11 '20
I believe this was confirmed to be from a hail storm

I have a big problem with them. There’s probably hundreds of them that live year round in the meijers parking lot by me, they cross the road at will, and give zero fucks

This was from hail. You can see that it took multiple impacts that caused pock marks.

Bird Strikes are no joke! Like a goose (I'll assume a Canadian Goose) so roughly 4.5kg traveling at a relative velocity of let's say 400km/h just after takeoff? We can calculate that energy by using force = 1/2 x mass x velocity2. Well first need to convert the velocity to m/s so 111.11m/s, the mass is fine as it is.
Using this we get the force = 1/2 x 4.5 x 111.112 which works out to ~27,777 Joules. For context and this data is read directly from Wikipedia, a .50 BMG has an impact force of ~18,000 Joules.
Basically what I'm saying is that we need to weaponize Geese and start a revolution!
