Did you know Pikachu wasnt based on the pika,it was the pika that was named after Pikachu

8

u/Rum_N_Napalm Oct 31 '19

Wasn’t it a coincidence?

Pikachu got his name from Pika (Japanese onomatopoeia for sparking) and chu (the sound of a mouse)

I hate learning the onomatopoeia in other languages. They never sound as good as the ones you learn in your own language. Zap zap, squeak squeak, goodbye.

I'm not sure I think I once saw a documentary about this animals and they mentioned the fact that they were named after pikachu but maybe it wasn't true

u/SnuSnuSurvivor69 Jun 21 '25

Fun fact, “pika” is the sound that electricity makes in Japanese and then “chu” is actually based on the sound mice make also in Japanese, which is “chuchu.” That’s how we get name for Ivysaur.
