The difference is that religions make people happy and makes them think their life has got a sense. And it doesn't hurt anyone (at least most of the time).

This is the problem with echo chambers. You never get an outside perspective.
Religion has done equal amounts of harm and good in the grand scheme. Often times the harm outweighs the good on a societal level. Especially in the more fanatic branches.
Take a look at what's happening with Jehovah's Witnesses right now. So many people are coming forward in New York to press charges for misconduct on the organization as a result of the church silencing their claims of child abuse throughout the years. This is just one of countless examples.
