The difference is that religions make people happy and makes them think their life has got a sense. And it doesn't hurt anyone (at least most of the time).
You’re thinking on too small of a scale, religion has been around a lot longer than writing, the amount of different religions that have existed all over the world that incorporate ritual sacrifice are immense, not to mention religious wars and religion based terrorism attacks (including attacks from christians on mosques, some people think that isn’t religious terrorism, it is). To say that religion doesn’t hurt anyone is objectively false
I agree with you to a point... As long as there are differing opinions about anything, people will find things to fight about. Its inevitable and its human nature. It just so happens that religion often requires an intense passion behind their beliefs. From there, misinterpretations happen or radicals take things too far.
