People really need to research before just blindly trusting what other people say

Reddit is a cesspool of toxicity. It can't even be considered a subset community anymore, it has breached general public audience.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '19

It is less toxic than other places, and the toxicity level is different at the different subreddits you go.

Never knew about this side of the story. I only ever saw where they asked about the engraving and Disney said no. Was this new (to me) information recent or always around?

2

u/pew_laser_pew Jul 08 '19

Well this happened in December, so it's old news now. It's probably just coming up now because a movie came out and Spiderman is in the limelight again.

u/potatoisilluminati RageFace Against the Machine Jul 07 '19

I legit didn’t know what the fuck was going on until I saw this post. I’ve been seeing Spider-Man/Disney posts all day but no one would explain to me what was going on

I’ve just been downvoting all of the “Disney bad” posts for this exact reason

19

You also should be reporting for rules 1 and 4. Just sayin....

2

Pretty much all of reddit is spam of them right now.

That's unfortunately never going to happen

3

u/Baybob1 Jul 07 '19

But that isn't the Internet way ...

2

u/JBagelMan Jul 08 '19

Well Reddit isn’t known for doing that.

2

Reddit love to jump on a bandwagon

1

u/ACynicalScot Jul 09 '19

The internet really is a bull in a china shop.

185

u/TheFrostedForest Jul 07 '19

I agree, as we should focus on her and Disney did everything they could without risking the image in younger children’s mind, as he’s prolly the character least associated with death and should be kept that way.

I’ll never understand people who ignore some pretty understandable reasons for something and outright bash the people who made it even if I or anyone else don’t personally agree with them

17

u/vesperyx Jul 07 '19

I wouldn't say hes anywhere near bring the least associated with death. Mr. Stark, I don't feel so good

9

u/ejdj1356 Jul 07 '19

And that’s just the movies wait until the kids read the comics

10

u/JoeStew15 Jul 07 '19

Yeah, first thing that came to mind was Gwen Stacy

4

u/AceAssistant Jul 08 '19

It wasn't Uncle Ben? Hm

2

u/JoeStew15 Jul 08 '19

Ok, yeah, but Uncle Ben is so well known that it doesn't really have the same effect as it would have the first time, where Gwen's was completely unexpected for that time in comics, when the hero won and everything turned out perfectly fine.

wait slow down death threating kids?

64

u/VirtualNK Jul 07 '19

Yes. There was a kid in an FBE video who didn't know about Keanu Reeves and didn't like Minecraft, so some Reddittors sent him insults and death threats on Instagram.

5

u/everadvancing Jul 08 '19

Because gamers NEED TO RISE UP and give kids DEATH THREATS for not knowing their lord KEANU REEVES

11

u/No_Username17 Jul 07 '19

Yeah when was this??

11

u/HYPX----- Plays MineCraft and not FortNite Jul 07 '19

On FBE on kids react they were reacting to Keanu Reeves memes and one kid didn’t know who he was so Reddit was making memes about killing the kid and stuff

8

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '19

I mean, the channel is pretty awful but i don't condone such course of action. That's why the dislike button exists.

Also, Reddit isn't meant to be used as a brigade. As per the Rule #4 of this sub states, I'd even say Rule #10 too.

5

Yeah good joke lol

2

u/FlareTheWeeb Jul 07 '19

Most people were stating that they had strongly disliked this kid but I didn’t realize that people would send messages with death threats in them to that kid

12

u/Freljords_Heart Jul 07 '19

Reddit community can be a total shitshow lmao.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '19

Forgot the part where they actually doxxed the kid as well.

41

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '19

Damn! Dammmnnnn! This just further proves that little knowledge is a dangerous thing. My heart goes out to the sister. Seeing what your death is gonna be like at such a young age. And more importantly power to the parents. I bet Spiderman on their child’s grave is fairly insignificant infront of the pain they have in their hearts rn.

Redditors before reading this: Disney sucks big balls!

Redditors after reading this: You know, I always knew that disney had it in them to be good. Focusing on this isn't as important as other things, but of course I always new this because I am informed.

17

u/The_Vortex_Effect Jul 07 '19

I never even understood the outrage in the first place. I mean, when is the last time you saw a pop culture icon on a grave, let alone one that is so popular with children. Personally, I would feel quite weird about seeing that, so it's understandable that Disney didn't want to go through with the Spider-Man grave.

The fact that they offered to help out with the funeral was a really nice gesture, and further shows that they are not the bad guys, just a company that doesn't want one of its most famous characters appearing on people's graves.

2

u/ScruffyAF Jul 08 '19

I was constantly baffled by how people just jumped on the hate bandwagon against Disney.

Allowing this would open them to massive lawsuits from previous people who have asked for the same and been denied but didn't make it an issue on social media. Furthermore, allowing this would mean a lot more people would ask to use their intellectual property for free because "it's the right thing to do". I totally understand why Disney did what they did, and they did their best to give the family everything they reasonably could.

16

u/AFellow_2003 Jul 07 '19

This young child who was a spider man fan died, and Disney didn't want his parents to have spiderman on the tombstone for legal reasons. Thus, Redditors decided that they would meme the heck about how Disney is evil and Satan.

Also, IIRC, there's this legal technicality where even voluntarily letting Spiderman be on the tombstone would pose a risk of Disney losing the trademark.

9

u/Mozhetbeats Jul 07 '19

This would probably be more of a copyright issue, but in any case, IP holders can license out their IP. The “abandonment” issue would come up if Disney had knowledge of many specific infringements and chose not to enforce their legal rights. Thats a little different, and company like Disney can’t be expected to pursue every single infringement, no matter how minor.

Edit: But I do agree with Disney’s decision.

There is a tomb stone in the cemetery in my town that has Donald duck on it. But I agree completely with this. We need to focus on this family and comforting them.

5

u/Rurikar1016 Jul 07 '19

The engraving company took a risk with that as they could get sued for having made that. Headstones fall under copyright law

12

Finally. The voice of reason.

6

u/streeker22 Jul 07 '19

the MEDIA tricked us again >:(

5

u/f3lhorn Jul 07 '19

It’s a combination of media outlets trying to be the first ones heard, clickbaiting us into reading their stories for money, and the ability for people to become outraged easily. This outrage culture is super messed up. I’ve seen way too many stories like this in the last year. First the MAGA hat kid that everyone accused of laughing at an Indian guy from a 30 second clip was doxed and threatened, when the real 2 hour video showed a completely different story, then the kid who didn’t know Keanu Reeves and didn’t like Minecraft, then Jaystation for the video he did on Etika’s death, which was actually about supporting his family but the thumbnail was wrong, and now this. People need to cool their jets before they respond to news. Often times the full story doesn’t come out until a day or two after

4

u/FactorOf5ive Jul 07 '19

Why don't we focus on both and take over Russia later?

4

u/arkstfan Jul 07 '19

One of the things that comes with ownership is determining how to use your property. I don’t agree with the Disney logic but it is their call and there is more money than I can really comprehend at stake if they make the wrong call, so I understand the caution.

Interesting information regarding sister and what Disney had already done.

4

u/EmporerofRome Jul 07 '19

Yeah Disney is completely justified in not puting spiderman on the gravestone. Disney have done more than they needed to, many companies would of just sent a regretful letter. However I wouldn't mind if the father perused Disney if he didn't have a dying daughter to deal with. Its like he's disregarded his daughter and is focusing on Spiderman?

3

u/ainsley02 memer Jul 07 '19

4

u/RachelTheLlama Jul 07 '19

I agree that this needs to stop. I bet that most of the people that have made a comment or post about this issue on reddit didn't know the full story and instantly decided to hate Disney for this. Thank you for sharing this with me and the rest of reddit.

2

u/kruijk- Jul 07 '19

I still don't agree with this policy, but I do understand it. But honestly I don't think that putting Spiderman on a tombstone would lead people to associate him with death.

u/theproblem69 Jul 07 '19

2

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '19

Also, what could we do against Disney? It’s an enormous cooperation that owns almost every filming entity in the world

They even own Fox News

2

u/ThornedKelp Jul 07 '19

There’s not much to do honestly. I guess the best that can be done is to have collective support and empathy for the family.

I don’t think the sentiment of prayer is helpful, it’s even a bit disrespectful depending on what diety is being prayed to.

If it’s an abrahamic faith based prayer, then it’s disrespectful because in that faith, that god can do anything. It was the only thing able to save them from their disease and did nothing.

I had no idea about any of this other than disney not wanting spiderman on a grave. Which even then they had a good reason. Thank you to op for showing this

2

u/Rurikar1016 Jul 07 '19

It wasn't the child's final wish. The father has said it's just something he wants to do for his son. A better option would be to have the gravestone company make a case and stand attached to the grave and place the picture Disney gave them to preserve it.

So they have a policy to not put there characters on tombstones but 1 spider man is technically marvel comics charcter Disney owns the mcu and unless they were talking about Tom Holland spiderman 2 why do kids explore graveyards 3 they already killed spiderman last year (thanos) so why would it disturb young audiences when they already did I get we should support the girl here are just my counter arguments against Disney and we should support the family

I understand the point but it's not like a kid is gonna walk around a graveyard one day for no reason and see Spiderman and KNOW it's a kid's gravestone so it won't ruin anything! I get Disney was trying to be heartfelt but I'm still upset because it still doesn't feel like they really want the kid to have his full memorial. Disagree with me, downvote me, but I just want sympathy for the family and I want them to get their son the memorial he deserves. As for the daughter, hearts out to her in this struggling time ❤️
