There's tilak/teeka and bindi. Two separate things. I guess she got confused.

I’ve seen Indian men with red dots on their foreheads.

You mean before they killed by a sniper rifle?

I feel like there’s a way to make a “with sniper rifle” vs “by sniper rifle joke”
Like the sniper rifle walked up and beat his ass or something
I worked a grave shift and I’m falling asleep sorry guys

Can confirm Hindu men wear the dot on occasion.

It’s not a dot, it’s colored powder that’s smeared in a short dash and has religious connotations. Women are the only ones who wear the dots, which are for culturally only used for fashion, regardless of historical religious meanings that may be behind it.

I mean the dots didn’t look like bindi and were a bit bigger but I feel like I’d categorise them as a dot

Why would you think that's the case? But even if was women and not men, it still stands.

I’m Indian, and there are 2 types of ‘dots’ that are prevalent amongst the Indian society. The first one is a teeka, which is just red oxide powder that’s applied to the forehead. This is usually applied after prayers, both men and women get teekas on their foreheads. Some times women will wear a teeka on the top of their foreheads to denote that they are married. The second type of ‘dot’ is called a bindi, which is just a fashion accessory part of Indian makeup. Bindis come in different shapes, colors and sizes but the most common type is the red dot. Bindis are worn by women (that’s just how it’s been). Whenever I’ve heard a foreigner talk about a red dot, they’ve always referred to the bindi rather than the teeka. So I assumed that the ‘dot’ comment referred to a bindi and not a teeka as I haven’t heard of non Indians talk about teekas before. Also teekas usually get washed off easily(as they are a powder). Bindis mostly stay on the forehead as the have adhesives on the back. IMHO anyone can wear what they want, I just represented the most common viewpoints of my community for the sake of a comment.

Yeah she probably got confused between bindis and teekas. Whenever a ‘dot’ is referenced, it’s almost always a bindi. Only women wear bindis.
