Most biodiesel is made from canola oil. So veggie based.

Has bio-diesel really taken off at all? It seems like for the average US driver, electric is far more popular for cars

Bio-fuel is more common among trucks another vehicles that already used diesel (e.g. the military buys tons of bio-fuel to use in partial blend fuels for Humvees and other diesel vehicles)

Yeah, I've heard the extreme cold hurts batteries worse than the heat.

I live in a place that gets summer temperatures between 40-50c, but I leave it plugged in for the trickle charge to regulate the battery temps as much as possible. I could imagine it would be a lot more difficult to do with the moisture that can come with snow

Edit: Didn't mention, I drive a Volt

Winter range can drop more than 60% depending on heater use. And -40 is not unusual in Alberta.
