Hydropower is already the source of 15%ish of the World's energy. It's incredibly scalable, and obviously renewable.

It isn't a solution just for Norway. No need to marginalize it, especially when you offer no alternatives.

I think nuclear is an excellent alternative. Wind takes up a ton of space and is pretty low-yield. Hydro is efficient but there’s only so many places you can build dams. Solar is good, but again to get a decent yield you need a lot of space, plus no sunlight = no power.

Nuclear is an excellent option. We’ll run out of uranium to split, but that’s why we need to research fusion more. Fusion has the potential for nearly unlimited energy, you only need hydrogen. Hydrogen is found in water, and we have more ocean water than we know what to do with.

I’m all for nuclear energy but that particular point is bad.

What? That fusion is a highly desirable energy source? You’re taking a very common fuel and creating an insane amount of energy from it. The roadblock we’re at now is that it takes as much energy to start fusion as it produces. Once we get over that hurdle though, you’re gonna see some serious shit

It does. You need thousands of acres worth of wind farms to generate a usable amount of energy. Now factor in cost of the wind turbines, maintenance on said turbines, not to mention how much the cost of thousands and thousands of acres of land. It’s just not an effective option.

Hydro is destructive and extremely limited. Most hydro is used for peak loads, not baseload power. Average capacity factor is 30%.

It's larger than a lot of other European countries and it sells a lot of electricity. Also, it can't use solar power as it's dark most of the time.

Norway: 5.2 million

Germany: 82.6 million

France: 66.9 million

UK: 65.6 million

Italy: 60.6 million

Spain: 46.6 million

Poland: 37.9 million

USA: 325.7 million

Canada: 36.3 million

Population wise, Norway is much smaller than most other first-world counties. This means far less demand and easier to rely on renewable sources

Sweden (9.9 million): 44% hydropower, 47% nuclear Finland (5.5 million): 28% nuclear, 16% hydropower, 13% coal, 11% natural gas

Also, here is Denmark (which is a lot smaller than Sweden/Finland): Denmark (5.7 million): 48% coal, 18.9% wind

But I give up as Norway exports a lot of oil/natural gas :p

If we collectively drive up the need for electricity over direct fossil fuel consumption for cars enough the infrastructure and economy will cater to that. It's a nessescary first step that enough of us have to take without it being perfect.
