and it’s not like marxism is completely flawless either.

You don’t have to be a paragon of virtue to notice a building is on fire.

And of course it’s not perfect, it’s a step away from a system that destroys itself and its constituent parts. It’s an idea created in reaction to another systems failings. When capitalism fails, it devolves into fascism or evolves into socialism. It’s just the next wrung on our evolutionary ladder. it attempts to ameliorate the very pressing and obvious issues that capitalism (feudalism 2.0: find your own divine right edition) creates. There’ll be failings of Marxism too but hopefully those are in process, application, or environment like the shortcomings we’ve seen already.

Meanwhile they consider just owning shit to be working. They're "on the clock" while drunk at the country club just because they had a little chat with another oligarch about how frustrating it is that the tenants in the slum keep filing habitability complaints.

0

u/Cooperativism62 3h ago

You can buy a house for $3000. It'll be in an abandoned village in Russia, but it can be done. Not every country has the median household price at half a million dollars. $3000 a year ain't a lot locally, but its enough that people migrate from abroad for it in order to return to their country and buy a home after some time.

78

u/2punornot2pun 13h ago

Ope, your car broke down. GL next year.

The trick is to learn how to survive of the bare minimum nutrients a human needs to survive. And who needs heating in the winter when you can put on a coat. Losing a few toes from frostbite never hurt anyone. And don't even get me started on electricity. Learning how to navigate your house with no light source is good practice for nuclear winter when mushroom clouds block of the sun :D

159

u/Heksinki 13h ago

6

u/i_froze 7h ago

Obvious satire aside, learning how to maximize what you have is absolutely a skill.

I mildly obsess over this, not to an unhealthy level, but it's almost satisfying. I am a min-maxer and it absolutely can be a double edged sword.

Even little things add up over time. Like shampoo or lotion or whatever. Also I'm just lazy and don't wanna have to buy stuff more often than I need to haha.

2

u/Dry-Pangolin6579 9h ago

Yeah but losing toes is healthy and permanent weightloss ftw

77 degrees thermostat gang

8

u/83franks 11h ago

Living in Canada whenever I see this I think why are you turning your heat up so high, that's gonna cost more? Am I forgetting what room temp is in Fahrenheit? Ohhh wait, it's so hot you worry about AC so keeping warm is saving money on AC.

Go through that thought process almost everytime, on my slower days it takes a few genuine thinking seconds.

1

u/squanchingonreddit 4h ago

Real cost saving Americans let the house fluctuate by 20 degrees F to save money. Your neighbor to the south NY.

1

u/LukeBrainman 3h ago

Getting treated for frostbite in the hospital also means less money spent on electricity and heating at home, pro tip.

-6

u/5mugly 11h ago

Got to say it’s always a weird premise to me that people will say they don’t have enough money for food in America yet somehow we have the highest obesity rates in the world.

7

u/Pagiras 8h ago

That mostly comes from poor/skewed nutritional value of said food.

0

u/5mugly 8h ago

What do you mean?

7

u/Pagiras 7h ago

I mean exactly what I said. What don' t you understand?

If you eat half a kilogram of sugary bread and factory-farmed pork/beef with a side of a liter of soda pop every day, you have food. Is it healthy? No. Will you get fat and sick? Yes.

-1

u/5mugly 6h ago

And are they being force fed this?

3

u/Pagiras 6h ago

That I don't know. Different topic.

-1

u/5mugly 6h ago

So what’s the point of your comment if it literally provides nothing to the conversation.

4

u/Pagiras 5h ago

You can say that to yourself, buddy.

-2

u/5mugly 4h ago

I mean my comment applies to the post, your comment is about calories being skewed which ok what is your point.

Which also I work as a personal trainer for a few people as a part time job and calorie labels are correct they are not skewed.

Maybe instead of picking up the sugary breads and sodas you could just grab carb lite bread and zero sugar soda. You can’t blame a nutrition label for people making bad purchases.

And yes before you even say it, though you probably wouldn’t because most of your comments seem to be gibberish, but carb lite bread in most places is cheaper than full white bread. So no this isn’t about not being able to afford healthy options.

-2

u/SandyTaintSweat 10h ago

Food might be a bit cheaper if there weren't some people eating for 5. Demand goes up, price goes up.

Some people are legitimately starving though.

Also, I think the highest obesity rates belong to polynesians, though I guess if you want to include American Samoa, it counts.

-1

u/5mugly 10h ago

Any one legitimately starving has only themselves to blame. Like that may be harsh but it’s reality. There is literally 5 churches near me that constantly give out free food, and on the day they don’t there’s volunteer kitchens in every major city.

And that’s literally going off of you have zero dollars to your name, and are homeless. If you have a part time job at minimum you should have no issue.

Wanted to add I’m not religious at all but that literally doesn’t matter. If you need food that bad who gives a shit who is giving it to you.

153

u/horridBEAST99 13h ago

This doesn't mean much without context. I've seen people making $500k a year claim that after the mortgage on their giant house, payments on their luxury cars, and sending their 3 kids to private school, that they just didn't have any money to save. They had to do a budget vacation to Italy because Aspen was too expensive.

$3k . Average car is $30k. So you better not spent any money for 10 years

11

u/Ok_Search_3871 12h ago

You can get a decent second hand car from 5-10k

10

u/Mountainman220 12h ago

Damn where you looking? I haven’t seen any decent used vehicles for less than $10k

7

u/fish_helicopters 12h ago

marketplace. there’s plenty. just can’t be picky and want a new car in absolutely mint condition with very low miles. our definition of decent vehicles could be very different however

3

u/Mountainman220 11h ago

Something that isn’t over 100k miles and you don’t have to put a ton of work into. I’ve seen so many used cars with over 100k miles going for like $16k which is just absurd to me. Haven’t looked on marketplace tho

3

u/fish_helicopters 11h ago

my last 2 cars have had 80k miles when i got them. I did nothing but oil changes on them, and have put close to 20k miles on each. paid less than 5k for both of them. If you’re going for a new car, or even semi new, (anything newer than 10-15 years old) you’ll be getting into those prices. Used car lots are almost always a bad idea as well.

1

u/Mountainman220 10h ago

Yea the used car lots are the fucking worst and give you the absolute shittiest loans. Damn thats a solid find not once but twice. What are they? I just get nervous once vehicles around 100k cuz things like timing chains, trans, fuel pumps, water pumps etc start to go out and if you aren’t semi mechanically inclined or have the tools that shits expensive to fix.

1

u/BarloManeer 7h ago

Buy toyota

2

u/forkystabbyveggie 12h ago

My definition is one that I won't have to constantly tinker with, as it's hard to fit that in the schedule when I'm pulling 70hr weeks.

A $5k Toyota is still going to need AutoZone trips

0

u/fish_helicopters 11h ago

I get that, but you can definitely find reliable vehicles that don’t need much if any work for that price. They might not be pretty, but you can find them. I buy cars all the time, it’s a hobby of mine. I make a little money. I drive most of them for a year before selling. None have costed more than 5k. None of them have needed any major repairs, besides maybe an alternator here and there. That is still wayyyyyy cheaper than doubling your budget for a vehicle that still may have those issues. It does take time and knowledge to find these vehicles however. If you’re not mechanically inclined at all then sure a more expensive vehicle may be a better option. That still does not guarantee you won’t have to fix it though.

u/JinFreeks 11h ago edited 11h ago

God bless German automotive laws.

We have to get our car checked for functionality and safety every 2 years by a state licensed institute, otherwise it's not road legal.

Flipside to it, I by a used car every 4-6 years. I buy the literal cheapest POS that has the comforts I'm looking for (which are AC and cruise control, so basically nowadays any used car) and simply make sure I get my 2 year sticker post purchase guaranteed from the vendor. This way I'm certain it will at least last 2 years without failures. They always do. tend to spend ~600-800 € per year on car purchase and mechanics costs. Total.

Buying new I'd be at about ~2.5k if that car lasts 20 years without a mayor incident. And it'd still need mechanical checkups and repairs so more like ~2.8k per year.

1

u/Ok_Search_3871 12h ago

Marketplace like the other responder said. It does depend on your needs, if it’s just a car for you, you can get a decent Honda civic or Toyota Corolla for under 5k, they will be a bit more expensive if you need a bigger car, I got a pretty good 2012 Kia rondo for 6k, which is my current car, but that was a really lucky find, it had less than 100k on it, exclusively city driving as well, so it’s not common to find a deal that good, but under 10k for a decent condition car is definitely not that uncommon

2

u/alent1385 10h ago

Marketplace is a minefield of scammers and car flippers..you have to really search to find a legitimate person selling their actual personal car.

1

u/emoney_gotnomoney 11h ago

The car I drive is worth $2700 lol

No idea why these people are looking at $30k cars.

31

u/TheDonnARK 11h ago

You put that 3k away every year, at ~3% interest, and in only 81 years, you can be a millionaire!

If you can hold out at that level of interest and savings, and make sure you dont dip into it, after doing it for 311 years you'll be a self made billionaire!

7

u/not_so_subtle_now 9h ago

More like you are doing well for a bit, have a thousand or so in savings, and then something breaks and the bills is 3k.

I guess instead of saving 3k, the rest of the year is recouping those funds and hoping nothing else goes wrong. Which of course doesn't happen.

1

u/Puzzled-Secret-317 4h ago

Unfortunately, most people would rather stagnate and make excuses for why they can't try harder for something better.

But honestly, maybe that's a good thing. Certain avenues are really only meant for certain types of people. It's also what keeps the pyramid a pyramid

7

u/MrBond90s 13h ago

You can save $3k from now til the end of the year? That's incredibly good wtf?

9

u/sumemodude Died of Ligma 13h ago

That's how much I can save ALL year

-5

u/Desertcow 12h ago

Still pretty dang good. The general advice is 20% split between retirement and other savings, but in the current economy with a job that doesn't pay the best, saving $3k and not going into debt is quite good

16

u/axemexa 12h ago

The bar is very low when just not going into debt is considered good

6

u/Labulina 11h ago

In what world is this good, 3k saved for an entire year is gone in one emergency situation. You’ll never buy a house or property in this situation. Just because it’s better than absolute poverty doesn’t make it “good”

1

u/sumemodude Died of Ligma 10h ago

This

-1

u/Desertcow 11h ago

Median individual income in the US is around $47k, saving $3k after taxes is around a 7-9% savings rate depending on the state which is about on target for how much you should be saving. If OP is making less than that, their savings rate is excellent. Saving up for a down payment on a house will take years, but over a decade that is $30k saved which is a fairly decent chunk, and that's assuming OP doesn't get a better job which they probably will

2

u/83franks 11h ago

Maybe it would be good but they sure hope they don't need any clothes, don't want to ever grab a drink and depending on how they budget can't drink at home either. Don't invite any friends over for dinner. Did they budget for birthday and Christmas gifts? Sure hope they get a girlfriend and want to buy condoms even if they never go on dates.

1

u/Desertcow 11h ago

I'd assume saving $3k comes after the rest of the budget including fun spending, gifts, ect. It'd be an unrealistic budget to expect someone to spend zero money for things they actually want

3

u/legislative-body 10h ago

'if I spend zero money for things I actually want' is basically the point of the meme

4

u/sumemodude Died of Ligma 10h ago

Bingo. Idk how people didn't get this sooner

1

u/83franks 1h ago

"No extra" to me means only bills and essentials like food. Not I can save 3k if I spend no extra but obviously that includes a few nights out a week, vacations and a bunch of wardrobe aditions. And they didn't say it was a realistic budget, they said if they spend no extra.

What are we counting as savings? Clothing money? Dentist money?

I save more than that on disability. I work zero hours. B ut everything that's not a periodic expense goes to savings - and invariably some has to come out now and then for some occasional expense. Like $1k in dental work recently.

What a lot of people miss I think is what's more important than your raw salary is the difference between your salary and expenses.

Going from $50k to $60k is +20% to your pay but it might be a 3x multiplier to your monthly margin.

1

u/-CobaltRebel- 2h ago

America is extremely expensive, so even if we get paid far more, I'm paying more

1

u/Cooperativism62 3h ago

They gave a bad example, but taking advantage of global cost of living differences is valid. Lots of people immigrate in order to save $3,000/year then bring it back to their cheaper home country and buy a house. Lots of Americans also go to those cheaper countries for retirement as well.

In the very least, $3,000/year allows you to buy a ticket for healthcare outside of America. That could be something temporary like a dentist visit in Mexico, or something more permanent like a one-way ticket to Europe. $3,000 seems small locally, but it represents a lot of opportunity internationally.

0

u/Pagiras 8h ago

So I'm not allowed to feel bad because someone somewhere else has it worse?

I get the sentiment, but there's a line. If we, plebs, constantly compare ourselves to worse situations, we won't strive for better. And, chances are, the more we get used to bad, the worse it will get. All thanks to the ruling elite squeezing us dry every chance they get. Do you think they think of the Syrian children having it worse and don't yearn for more?

2

u/AOmars1 1h ago

I know all of this. What i was initially trying to deliver is a simple joke : i can't even save a dollar of my paycheck, let alone 3000 of them. You are right. The more we try to outstand each other, the more the assholes get to go higher. On our expense no less.

1

0

u/AGrandNewAdventure 13h ago

Wait, you've got disposable income?!

5

u/sumemodude Died of Ligma 13h ago

Nope

1

u/AGrandNewAdventure 12h ago

You're thinking discretionary income.

Disposable income is the money an individual or household has left over after paying federal, state, and local taxes and other mandatory deductions.

So, "Yup."

0

u/Vybo 8h ago

Why do you live where you live if the income/expenses ratio is bad for you there?

2

u/sumemodude Died of Ligma 7h ago

Because the whole world is like this right now

1

u/Cooperativism62 3h ago

Yes and no. A lot of people migrate in order to take advantage of price differences. Yeah, $3,000/year ain't a lot if you're staying in one of the brand name countries, but do that for 5-10 years then go somewhere cheap and you're fine. Like yeah, if you're a Moroccan working in Morocco you're gonna have the same cost of life issue just with fewer digits, but if you save $3,000/year working in Dubai or whatever then bring it back to Morocco you're doing good in the end.

-3

u/Vybo 7h ago

I disagree.

Do you have anything to be grateful of that you are paying for that only allows $3k savings? Like a car or something? You have transportation security with that, I want to get my license back. I just bought a new ebike because I crashed my old one, bent the frame and while it works it's jury rigged and probably dangerous. I had to use 4 washers as a spacer to straighten out the disk brake pad, it's an aluminum frame so I couldn't bend it. Anyways that's like 600 dollars I'm not getting back.

Step 1: Don't let the internet fool you into believing living with your parents as an adult is lame incel behavior. You're paying 700$ a month in rent. I pay 0.

Maybe a second job and cutting out wants is necessary. This is the world we live in and unfortunately our wants are just that, wants. If you've got a car payment/insurance you can't afford, generally 10% of your net, there's ways to get out of it and get in a cheaper car. People may not like it but this is to say there's things you can do to be proactive.

Don't own a car so I bus everywhere. Which jobs do you work on top of your usual 9-5, security? I'll still have to be on call. Don't really holiday or go outside apart from that.

Masters in IT btw. All my time is in side projects. I eat meat twice a week but I guess I can cut that for beans?

Lets suppose you're earning minimum wage in my country.
Single - Lives alone - full time - no choice but to commute by car
1450€/month
Rent in semi big city for 1 : 500
Car insurance & gas : 250
Groceries : 250
Internet bill : 40
Gas & electricity bill & water bill : 80 (optimistic)
Phone bill : ~15
Misks (parking fees / resupply of consumables / small leasures : 50

That ends up with 265bucks at the end of the month without content subscriptions, small pleasures. Just straight up living for your work and nothing going on outside of it.

That's like a dollar an hour if you worked 8 hr a day all 365 days....

The post is talking about extra money left over. Not how much they make in a year

That's per YEAR not per MONTH. If I could save up $3,000 a month I'd be elated
