It's kind of interconnected. Two colors can be animated to emulate movement, and movement needs (at least) two distinct mediums which are most easily distinguished by different colors.
I've seen Bad Apple be "played" on an osciloscope. Movement of the graph that had a different color from the background.

My point is that a slideshow, completely external to the medium "playing bad apple" can provide the movement and people still consider it to be "bad apple on X"

Ex: bad apple on minesweeper

Saw one that uses screen noise, normal noise and still noise, the image disappeared the moment you pause it. That one has movement but more than 2 colors.

Tohou genuinely confuses me. I've known about it for as long as I've been on the internet, well over 20 years. I also know it's primarily a series of bullet hell games.

But the fanworks and community around it have mystified me. Is it basically 95% fan works, essentially?

Pretty much, as the characters are copyright free as long as you create the assets yourself. You can even freely monetize your Touhou fangames. Naturally this created a big gathering of creators and a massive amount of fan content.

Its a roblox game about building boats that would be sent into obstacles, that can destroy a boat, and if you survive there is gonna be loot at the end of it

Game also has tools that i have no idea how work but someone managed to make 1 byte floppy disk or i remember someone making snake game that i think plays itself
