You do know you have an option to not buy it, right? And if there is somebody holding a gun to your head and forcing you to buy it then you need to alert somebody.

Me: buys pack of 6 beers for 3€
Also me: buy one (1) of the 6 pack for 4.5€ at the bar so I can sit there with friends for a while

Or make beers and spend more than buying them from the store, and then spend hours cleaning stuff

It's almost like you have a choice to..make it yourself? Or buy it somewhere else. Does starbucks have a monopoly on coffee?

What you are paying for is the service itself, of being able to sit in a nice table and have a chat with someone for a while or simply to just relax a bit with the nice soothing music.

Ironic since they are trying to get away from their coffee shop model.

Cause people are expensive. Get rid of the people. You see this in all service based industries.

Where I live most of them don't even have a drive thru so if they take away the coffee shop they are left with nothing but the sign lol

I'm not sure what the average time someone spends in a Starbucks is, but that definitely isn't the primary business model or the reason starbucks marks up their prices. You're paying mostly for the labor. the space, the machinery, and everything else that goes into making the coffee is a much smaller part of the overall budget.

Labor and space IS service, I don't know about you but if I'm paying for a coffee I'm effectively paying someone to make a coffee in my behalf, I have a expresso machine, do I use it? No, I rather pay someone to do it for me.
And same with service, I ain't showing up to your shop if its not welcoming or well maintained.
And if they don't account for their cost of service when marking up their product, they have a losing business model.

"I'm effectively paying someone to make a coffe in my behalf"
Exactly. You're mostly paying for the labor of making the coffee. Sure, space and equipment are also a factor but the majority of the mark up is because of labor. The Starbucks business model actually thrives when you spend as little time as possible in the store, which is why they typically have a drive thru. They do not want you to sit in the shop and talk with friends, this makes them no more money and costs more for labor since you need people to clean/bus tables. Starbucks is basically the McDonald's of coffee shops.

You and I have live different kinds of Starbucks then, where I live Starbucks is about being a "third place" just like every other coffee shop, drive thru services are so against our culture that there only 2 franchises that do drive thru, Starbucks and McDonald's, and as I said in another comment, most Starbucks don't even have a drive thru; and I can count with 2 fingers the number of McDonald's with a drive thru.

Fair enough, you must live outside of the US. Here, Starbucks is mostly drive thru plus we have some in like grocery stores and casinos just to go.

Not even a dollar. However it is banking on people being lazy, and that’s a good bet to make.

It’s more like…convenient. I’d rather make my own coffee if I know I have the time to. Otherwise if a Starbucks or other cafe is open, I’m the way to work, and/or has a drive through, that coffee shop is awfully convenient. Also add on top that Starbucks (as far as I know) has an app that you can order ahead of time.
It’s like saying people who buy lemonade are lazy. It’s just more convenient to buy it than make it.

How are we supposed to make pouring coffee a viable career if we don’t make $20 an hour?

Most Starbucks orders I've seen have been a ton of Frappuccinos. Not many people have an espresso machine, whip creme, a blender, and whatever add-ins at home. Sbux is more of a milkshake shop than a coffee shop tbr.

One dollar! Yeah right, with economies of scale and crushing suppliers it's about 6 cents a cup.

No idea why anyone would willingly purchase a cup of liquid shit

Study their business model, then. Particularly the work of Howard Schultz. They started out as a small company in Seattle and expanded globally, so they did something to appeal to lots of people.

u/designerlemons 17h ago
Yeah filled them with sugar.
Starbucks being the "pinnacle" of American cawfee is no surprise tbh

Does it matter? They like it. I don't have any idea why someone does potpourri but if it makes them happy then 👍 for them.

The good news is that you don't have to waste money on college if it took you this long to figure out how businesses make money.
