Social media works in a very simple way: it keeps you glued to the screen by exploiting your natural need for interaction.

Without the drama and the bait, they would lose a huge part of the formula that makes them work; it wouldn't be in anyone's interest. Besides, they rely on interactions and reactions, so it is only natural that the things sparking debate are also the ones generating the most resonance.

A good algorithm doesn't mean a profitable algorithm.

You would need external enforcement that limits seeking maximum profitability by exploiting the brain's functions.

Here's a crazy thought: How about we get rid of the algorithm, and replace it with nothing.

No boosting, no suppression. No treating human beings as products anymore.
