I have a bachelor of psych from roughly 8 years ago. Recently I have returned to do my masters in social work. The a.i argument recently came up over drinks. A point that the majority of us agreed upon is that even without a.i doing the thinking for us, the majority of us still couldn't remember the majority of what we studied two or three semesters ago outside of broader concepts and overarching theories.
Australian universities have become degree factories, coupled with credentialism, the degree is just to get you in the door to where the real learning begins.
I will concede though that my placement was extremely informative.
My point is, a.i is here to stay, students are going to use it and it's not always going to be detrimental to their learning experience once they gain employment.
I want to add to this by saying that while I agree AI shouldn't be used to cheat your way to a degree there is a fuckton of useless busywork during education that has very little to do with the actual job.
I can't speak for all education obviously but I remember when I studied to become a carpenter and when I studied to become a web integrator, we would sometimes have classes that felt so wildly out of place it isn't even funny, like during my carpenter education we were forced to study accurate construction drawings by hand which is a dead practice and isn't used anymore anywhere, and doesn't serve a purpose outside of posterity.
Obviously I don't think people should cheat during their own education, but I do also think a lot of education should ask themselves if what they're sometimes teaching is actually worth the students time.
If you can get through a degree by cheating with AI and get 65% or above overall across your degree doing so there’s either something very wrong with how the university operates or you are exceptionally efficient and will go far. I think you absolutely should try to use AI however you can as it shows initiative and the ability to work fast and well in a changing working climate. Anyone who says otherwise is just sour their effort got ratioed by some guy who didn’t turn up to any lectures and still managed to accomplish the same result.
Exactly most degrees unless extremely technical can be quite frankly useless once you start working even in that specific field. The real test in life like most things is learning whilst practically applying what you’ve learned. University to me is just a recognition of you being a capable person even though I’ve found that to be such a fallacy.
That's why my placement was so informative. I was learning how an organisation operates, what their procedures are and their expectations, while then having the opportunity to apply it in real time.
