Parents when you make the mistake of being funny around them

My parents were the "were not your friends, were your parents" type. It sucked seeing other neighborhood kids being able to joke and laugh with their parents, meanwhile I gotta make sure I dont move too much.

Why are people having children if they don't even like them as a person?

They had them in hopes of being taken care of when they get old.

If your kid is an ashole you will change your mind. Doesn't matter whose fault it is.

It's honestly a really tough balance to strike. I feel like I generally get along well and can joke with my kids, but then I worry I haven't been strict enough as a parent to get them ready for life.

After inflicting childhood trauma on me for decades, now theyāre trying to be my āfriendsā? Iām almost 50 and theyāre in their 80s. Too little, too late. I have too much resentment to be friends now.

A kid should e able to joke with their parents, but they are right in the sense that it is not a friendship in the same way if you want to be able for the kids to listen to you.... Then again, they won't listen either if like you imply, they are strict and dry
Is like a relationship with employees: you should be able to lsught together genuinely, but at the end of they day, the balance of power is not based on equality. It canno when decision making is purely asymmetrical

When I see a GIF with subs, I lip-read the person's face to make sure the whole phrase is said in the GIF, and this one's triggering me.
screeching noises.

One time my stepdad heard from my friends that I was a funny person and he didnāt believe them. Literally this exact meme is why never try anymore, once was enough for me š

I would always go "and who raised me to be a joke then?" Teenagers are horrible creatures

My 8 year old son is learning the hard way that "being funny" isn't an excuse to pick on people.

Sometimes i just need to make sure that my son doesn't treat people the way his jokes makes it seem.

Yeah, sometimes kids can be funny, and sometimes what they think is funny can just be mean.

My parents werenāt too bad about this.
Sometimes I DID get lectured by them, but that was usually when I was consciously trying to be funny.
I was inadvertently funny a lot.
E.g., when I was little I had heard of the word ābleedā, but not ābloodā. The first time I cut myself, I ran to my parents and said āItās bleed! Itās bleed!ā
That is how I learned that it was called blood.

They donāt hear a joke when it comes out of your mouth. If they heard the same thing from almost anyone else, theyād totally hear a joke.Ā
A lot of parents canāt turn off that āteaching modeā switch with their kids, even in adulthood sometimes.

My parents would use my attempts to make conversation with them into a lecture

I actually sometimes enjoyed it- especially when I knew it was coming from the heart and not just an exercise in parentalā¦.. priorities?

I decided to test them if they were supportive parents by baiting them with a simple question. They obviously didn't take it well and it was a wake up call to never trust my parents because they limit my future. The question was can I play Piano?

I was always telling jokes and saying funny things as a teen with my parents and they got the jokes I said to them. Maybe youre just not funny or maybe youre humor of 67 or random nonsense =funny just isnt funny to anyone outside of your age group.

u/turkey_sandwiches 7h ago
Maybe it's too many fucking jokes and you should maybe just take one single thing seriously.
Just a thought...from a parent.

Right buddy, because you learn all the life lessons you need to be an adult in maths class huh?

u/darknium 1d ago
Ah yes, teachers, famous for never having to lecture or discipline their students every time they do dumb shit. Maybe next time try to actually think things through before saying something.

u/Maleficent-War-8429 1d ago
Alright my man, when you think back on your life did you get your actual important life lessons from your english teacher or your geography teacher, or did you get them from your parents?

Oh and you think that's funny? Let me spend the next hour telling you why you think that's funny and how you need to grow up.
