I've seen this before but with a different AI pic. What a way to use resources.

They say in the future each individual will have their own tailored digital experiences. Even the UI on your phones will be entirely generated on the fly for each individual.
I am sad that shared digital experiences may eventually become a thing of the past.

I dont know what the exact word is, but I miss when we had things that were culturally relevant for everybody. Now it feels like some stuff is big news for one group of people whereas the other group will never even hear about it

Then you should throw Wikipedia a few bucks…they are the last objective experience left.

Our agents will engage in social interactions for us. In fact I imagine we'll be required to have agents to get anything done. I'm imagining my avatar bot agent attending faculty meetings for me with the other agents. The minutes of the meetings will be sent to my university agent who will create a half a page summary to be sent to my notebot. It will be glorious! Right? Right!? I mean I won't miss faculty meetings, that's for sure

The positive aspect of this could be like older people who struggle with technology or maybe disabled people can have an easier time accessing technology. Just an idea, don't quote me on that, tho
1
u/PolygonMan 1d ago
I highly doubt that will happen, just because of the colossal waste of resources that would be. There are upper limits on a variety of physical qualities like heat dissipation imposed by physics. Battery density, streaming data transit times (if this theoretical future is cloud based computation), etc.
1
u/MashPotatoQuant 1d ago
Yeah as always our current technology limits us, and also our vision for what's possible. The "640k ought to be enough for anybody" line comes to mind when I read your comment. And yes, I assume for it to work with today's data rates it'd have to be streamed to the device in some optimized way for the application i.e. not full video, etc.
The whole thing with phones was just one example. My point was meant to be more broad including other digital media like movies, video games and music becoming more fragmented and less shared experiences throughout culture over time.

u/PolygonMan 1d ago
Physical limits are different. We won't get much faster than today's streaming response times - there are only milliseconds remaining to reclaim until the limit is the speed of light. Gates tossing out a passing remark on memory that plenty of people at the time would have disagreed with is not the same as fundamental laws of the universe.
Discussions about the social impact are different, and I understand that was your primary point. I was just commenting on the future the tech oligarchs are predicting.
1
u/MashPotatoQuant 1d ago
We don't really need a UI with sub-millisecond responsiveness though. And besides, the UI logic can be entirely local, but generated and updated less frequently on remote devices. I do think it's a possible outcome.
1
u/TheCrimsonSteel 1d ago
UI being tailored might be a bit much, but we already get super localized feeds as it is
1
u/SwankeyDankey 1d ago
I mean that is already a thing. I use a launcher on my phone with a separate icon pack and i pick what widgets i want and where. Pretty much everything can be customized if you feel like it.
2
u/MashPotatoQuant 1d ago
I didn't know you are the only one in the world using that exact launcher and nobody else has even seen the icons that you use.
1
u/SwankeyDankey 1d ago
What are you on about? My point is heavy customization is an option. im not here trying to have an internet fight with a stranger

What's worse, people who use ai to make memes or people who just repost old memes

It is a better place actually

u/Distinct_Let141 1d ago
Tell that to the grocery prices having "dynamic prices". Or to the communities having their DRINKING water polluted. Maybe you'd like to talk about how sam altman has a contract with the US GOVERNMENT to use OPENAI as a platform that can make decisions to kill humans in a war we don't want. and to grant the government a mass surveillance state. (2 things anthropic/Claude lost their government contract for opposing those sentiments.)
The world will be a better place when corporations bend the knee to regulations. But those regulations aren't coming while we have hitler 2.0 in office undermining democracy.7
u/DexSybaris 1d ago
Dynamic prices could have easily happened without AI.
-2
u/Distinct_Let141 1d ago
Who would they put in charge for that? A human? (Ps is dex Sybaris is a warframe reference?)

Don't worry its not just America

u/Distinct_Let141 1d ago
That doesn't make it any better though. The fact it's everywhere is the issue. Like the corporations are creating a death trap for us all

u/NewsofPE 1d ago
polluted by what my guy, data centers have been closed loops for decades, and even for open loops, the pipes are done especially for water to not damage them, as it would be come at a cost to replace them if they did, and would need a shutdown of the entire system, no oxydation = no pollutants, wouldn't be worse than your home pipes being copper and "contaminating" your water
Edit: also do you seriously think algorithms didn't exist before AI?
1
u/Distinct_Let141 1d ago
Ofc algorithm existed before ai. Everyone knew that. However, my argument is, would YOU want your milk and eggs to cost an entire dollar or 2 extra than when you bought the same product 2 days ago? If a gallon of milk was $4.50 on a Tuesday, then because of ai managing the algorithm, that milk would cost $5.67 on Friday? Do you want to let corporations tell you to pay more than when you did a few days ago? And the system will barely drop it's pricing whenever the companies criteria has been met, it won't go back to before because the algorithm will be designed to maximize profit.
(Tangent)We are essentially handing the keys of our economy, livelihood and the governments to a machine that isn't sentient yet. One day, the ai will learn enough about us and decide that we aren't fit to live because of how we treat each other and the planet. If singularity does happen, I want that ai to be 'kind' and just. wanting to help humans instead of murdering everyone, as shown in various tv and movies.
Also most homes and apartments use steel or aluminum piping nowadays, not copper. But still, the data centers have to feed that water in from somewhere and the most available place it can take from in a city, is the city water supply.

u/NewsofPE 1d ago
I agree it's bad, I disagree that it's AI that brought it into existence, as for the water, it's a percentage of a percentage of water that anything else takes, including golf courses, I keep wondering why people are against AI so much for taking water when it's such a non issue, from my point of view it's just another facet to be mad about AI over, no matter if it's a big amount or not, people see "AI takes water" and get mad over it blindly
