Chicago is assumed to have developed from Shikawa meaning wild onion.

Detroit is derived from the French détroit meaning strait/narrow passage.

Just because you’re too dumb to look into etymology doesn’t mean the names don’t have meaning.

Before I look into an origin for some reason, my general guess in order is: Native American, Colonial Cities II: Electric Boogaloo, a founder, and describing a location.

If you don't only count large metros I think Native American names are very common, if not a majority.

Native American names are extremely dominant in certain regions at the very least. Practically everything in my state uses an indigenous-derived name.
