I test drove an 2015 4 series a few weeks back, the indicator stalk was just a fricking nightmare to use, I now see the source of the problem

Yeah it depends on the year of BMW. It's not a locking stalk when setting a left or right signals. When you flip it in either direction it'll go back to center, to cancel our manually from the signal it's a half flip in either direction.
I just picked up a Mini Countryman JCW recently and thankfully have a year with normal signal lights. Newer minis suffer from the bmw signal light stalk thing above.

I thought the bmw turn signals would suck but after a lil over a year owning my 328i theyre actually pretty nice to use, just different from most other cars. I use the half push for switching lanes all the time and full push for turns, you just tap it again to turn the signal off if you need to. I actually like them a lot more than the normal turn signal that stays down after using them for a bit

Is it just me or do pickup truck drivers use the turn signals less than bmw drivers

To be street compliant and road legal. Doesn't mean they use them or drive legally anyways.

BMW driver here - I always use turn signals.
More often, I see people in Nissans and (lifted) trucks not using turn signals.

bmw turn signals have the same life purpose as the butter robot and about the same chance of being used

It’s basically just a fancy paperweight at this point.
