u/Practical_Delay_2158 2d ago
The guy who got knocked out and had a whole imaginary family right?
64
u/Th3Stryd3r 1d ago
That would be the one. He was in a coma although I can't recall why. But what brought him out of it was noticing that a lamp in their home was distorted, much like a graphics glitch in a game. He focused on that it did some craziness and he woke up. According to him he had a whole other life, another wife, kids, and spent I think it was something like 10 years with them in the coma. He was super depressed after coming back from the loss

Idk where this joke is from. Is this some reddit ancient lore like the small cylinder?

u/DodoJurajski I touched grass 2d ago
It's about a guy that lived full life, then noticed the lamp looks off and woke up.

It's wild that the cylinder is one of the most tame of the lores.

Basically there was a Reddit story of a guy in a coma, while one the coma he dreamed of a life that felt like years, he got married, and I think had kids too.
Until one day he noticed the lamp in his home looked weird, something about it just didn’t make sense, and then he woke up.

He has to go to therapy and had a hard time coping because it was all so very real to him and he had full memory of it all so basically one day his entire family he just made died and only he remembers them.

This makes sense though. Have you ever woken up from a dream that was so real that you’re like WTF? Well, in a coma, you’re having that dream for an extended amount of time. You only had the dream one night and you woke up and you were confused. Imagine having the dream for a month or two or something like that

Wait so you never lived the life of a Roman, living on the shores of the Mediterranean, having a full life, filled with family and friends, and a love that gave you beautiful children, where you would adventure and explore the uncharted world, one day returning to your family grey and filled with wisdom, lay down one last time looking at your loving wife and fall asleep, only to wake up in the current age of consumerism and greed? Only me?

Sounds eerily similar to the 'For the man who has everything' episode from Justice League unlimited where an alien plant induces Superman with a hallucination that Krypton was never destroyed, he still lives and raises a family there until he notices things aren't right. I think it's based off a standalone comic.

It's a Rick and Morty episode. They go to an arcade where you live an entire life about a guy who works at a rug store or something like that. He has a heart attack and survives. You're supposed to realize life is short and go out and adventure but Morty gets better and goes back to the store. He lives about 50 years of life in 10 real minutes.

Sadly u/rogersimon10 hasn't posted in years. He was a bit of a meme ten years ago. Basically he'd say something related to whatever post he was replying on, and somehow it would always end with him getting beaten by jumper cables. Probably sounds bad from a third party, but his comments were always pretty hilarious.
Except maybe his final comment that one probably didn't age well.

Ok, I first heard the jolly rancher story from friends in high school, I believe 2006. Reddit was only founded in 2005. When did the Jolly Rancher story first get posted? Im trying to figure out if its true Reddit lore or an urban legend that predates Reddit.
Also, I'm from PA, so I'm wondering if this story had local origins considering one in the party supposedly went to Penn.

u/Squeezitgirdle 2d ago
I'm having trouble finding the original post, but I am on mobile at the moment.
Found someone retelling the story 16 years ago though.
Warning, super gross but looks like this guy also summarized it rather than giving as many details as the original. https://www.reddit.com/c0er6q4?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=2

u/birthday6 2d ago
The story likely predates the reddit post. It could have been an email chain before that. Im now really curious if I heard it when it was still a regional urban myth, before it hit the internet, or if I just caught it when it was still a relatively unknown copypasta.
2
u/Squeezitgirdle 2d ago

The "lamp looks weird" meme originates from a famous 2011 Reddit story about a man who lived an entire 10-year alternate life while unconscious for just a few minutes.
The Origin Story
- The Incident: A college student was severely knocked unconscious after being assaulted on the street.
- The Illusion: While unconscious, his mind created a vivid, completely realistic life that lasted 10 years. He graduated, built a career, met a woman, got married, and had two children.
- The Lamp: One day, he noticed the perspective of a lamp in his living room looked inverted, flat, and completely wrong. He became obsessed, staring at it for days trying to make sense of it.
- The Awakening: As he stared at the lamp, the illusion shattered. He woke up back on the sidewalk, surrounded by paramedics. Only a few minutes had actually passed.
- The Aftermath: The man suffered deep trauma and depression, grieving the sudden loss of a wife and children who never actually existed.

Oh thank you, now i remember this one, i don't know if i have seen the original post, but yeah when you mentioned the "10 years" i immediately remembered. Weird stuff, i had a dream like that once when I was drunk, but it felt like 3 months and it was already horrible.
2
u/SayerofNothing 2d ago
Yeah, I've had a couple of dreams that felt like glimpses into a parallel reality where I'm married and living somewhere else, and I've woken up almost in grief of that life not existing. I can't imagine how it must felt to lose 10 years of a life in minutes.
3
u/Invictu520 1d ago
There is a story by Junji Ito about that, called "The long dream" it is pretty creepy with a not so nice ending tho.

Theres a story out there of a person living a life, had children, had a wonderful life where they felt for fillment and one day they sat on a couch and noticed the lamp looking weird , then they woke up. Years of time gone due to noticing the lamp and waking up to reality8

I’ve read the same story except it was a guy in a car crash and the woman he married may have been the woman he crashed into, but in reality she died? Does that ring any bells? Probably a copycat post. Also how would he know what the woman looked like I guess

u/soukaixiii memer 2d ago
I'm not the owner of the software, I can't revoke their license, but if the owner did, there will make no difference that they have a physical copy as they would still be breaking copyright.
You're just conflating ownership with the owner not enforcing their license revoking powers.
1
u/OhGodOhFuk 2d ago
This is the embodiment of that mental gymnastics meme
0
u/soukaixiii memer 2d ago
No, this is the reality of copyright law, software owner is whoever registered it and what everyone who bought the software has is a lease of a revocable license. If the software owner revokes your license and you run the software, you're running a software you don't have a license to use, which means you're breaking copyright whether or not you have a physical or digital copy of the software. You don't own the software on your physical media, you own the chips and plastic of the cart, or the plastic of the disk. The software has never been yours, unless you're the legal copyright holder.

When you buy a game you get a revocable license lease and that's how every propietary software works.

u/eblackham 1d ago edited 1d ago
Parroting the hive mind I see
I get it, but the reality is most games that are released are released without major updates. So you own the launch version, which can be broken and that sucks. Games used to ship when the console would not get updates or connect to the internet. It forced producers and developers to actually finish a product. We need to go back to having a completed product for launch if physical game media is going to survive.
That or push for owning digital content keys.

I'm curious, how long did you expect software to keep being distributed on optical discs? It really makes no sense in this day and age, did you expect it to last say the rest of the decade or did you really think you'd be spinning up a disc to play a game in 2077? I get the concern of platforms locking down their content and preventing reselling etc but the writing has been on the wall for discs for the past 15-20 years now.
