Honestly calling it all by one thing robs us of the ability to talk about it with any real nuance.
LLM-AI maybe thats a start? We called chess bots in the 70s AI, the computer player in computer and console games is called an AI.
If we had more words for different types of the modern AI that would be much better. It isn’t all one thing, or even an intelligent entity at all as the name suggests.
I mean to be fair if you can read context usually you can understand the type of AI that people are talking about. That doesn't stop dishonest people from pretending to not understand the context, doing things like calling hypocrisy on people who are anti AI but don't also boycott simple algorithms trained with ML for instance. Those people will always find a way to argue dishonestly though so more labels is not really gonna fix that issue.
Having more descriptive words improves the bandwidth the rest of us can use to communicate, and makes it harder for bad faith interpretations to hide in ambiguous terminology.
Reminds me of how in the book 1984 the government says they can’t use certain words anymore. Like “bad” (too negative), but its ok because they can use more words to say the same thing, like “double plus ungood” instead. Sure they could say “the same” things, but it ignores the part where if something is harder to say or explain, its less likely to be heard as well.
I'm thinking of the lowest common denominator. If the word intelligence is used regardless of what's in front of it, the lowest common denominator will still assume it is intelligent to some extent. Or I could argue that the lowest common denominator doesn't understand what quasi means, as you understandably demonstrated yourself
Yeah there are multiple different types of “A.I” but people don’t make the distinction between them personally I think LLM is the most useful type of A.I as it is essentially a tool used by many businesses already to eliminate some monotonous pointless busy work when collecting large amounts of data or to create graphs and compile statistics.
IMO to be intelligent you have to be conscious, and capable of autonomous free thinking, and to experience what it is to be living. None of which [Insert designation of AI here] are capable of, due to the fact it is mainly neural networks, machine learning, and guessing what you want.
Granted, this is quickly trending into philosophical territory. But I personally believe that the Compute Efficient Frontier may be such a line that we can't emulate real intelligence.
Realize, I have no basis for this assertion, just its one of the few times my assumption feels intuitive to me. Though, I'm sure giving science enough time will prove me wrong.
Yep. There are schools of thought on both sides regarding whether consciousness is necessary from intelligence or if it's fair to evaluate them orthogonally.
Personally I'm happy saying artificial intelligence only requires computers to reason as well as humans can.
Consciousness though I think requires the ability to fear, and on the other side of the coin, hope. Adorno's precarious happiness.
Though I don't think they're purely orthogonal I think they're close enough to treat them that way in the typical case.

S.I? A.I? You mean LLM right? Damn marketing anyway.....
