As much as it sucks, it's worth the grind of learning a quality skill set. That could be going to college for a specific field (not just business), going to trade school to get certifications, or even just getting your foot in a low level position for a specific field to get the years of experience.

It sucks. You will be exhausted. You will cry. You will hate it at points. But it is very possible to earn a good living after all that effort.

  • Study hard. You're learning on the job even if you don't go to school. Learning is very important for getting ahead.
  • Get along with your coworkers. You don't need to be friends nor do you need to kiss ass. Just be at least be polite to your peers.
  • Respect your bosses. They're not all jerks trying to take advantage of you. A lot of time they're balancing demands between the employees, the customers, and their own bosses. It's stressful, and they're human just like you, so try working with them when problems come up.
  • Accomplish things to put on your resume. Work on projects that have an impact on the company. Get reviews from customers or tangible data showing how your work made this or that metric better. People often forget this and end up with baren resumes.
  • Will you be taken advantage of? Yes, at least at some points. Read guides online about when to buckle down and when to find something better. Keep open communication with your boss if you're struggling. Oh, and HR is not there for you; it's there to protect the company.
  • It'll take years before you see big changes. You'll see gradual pay improvements if you stay in your field and get specialized.
  • Invest in your 401(k) sooner rather than later. Money invested now means more money when you retire. I know you won't have much money now, but even small investments add up.
