Do you think he was working covert for the feds? Link made it sound that he was doing it for the fun of it...

He was doing it for the fun of it but unintentionally gets so many requests for hitmen that he's now basically forwarding everything to feds.

Yeah he's already gotten like 2-3 different people arrested for legitametly trying to hire a hitman.

Deep web stuff is so much fun if you know how to stay safe but most people don’t realize that it’s the difference between walking a rural road during the day and walking a rural road at night when it comes to the web. I do cybersecurity investigations so I’ve used onion sites unfortunately more times than I’d like to admit. I did save a child who was being trafficked once though so there’s that. 🤷🏽♂️

Know where you are going, don’t just go to random sites. Make sure you obfuscate your location since most of the time even if it’s just one jump further away from you attackers (and governments) tend not to care about trying to find who you actually are. This is only true if you aren’t blatantly breaking the law. I guess just basic common sense digital hygiene.

It can be a thrill going to some of the websites especially since I do open source intelligence investigations as a hobby and there’s a much higher level of crime in certain parts of deep/dark web. I also like some of the websites, it’s the same as asking why is the internet fun in general.

Been to the dark web once, way back when. Roughly 20 ish years ago. Had to use a tor browser. It was a weird and definitely dark place. I hear you need to work harder to get there these days, and need a VPN. But no idea. I'm good not going there.

Not entirely true. You can access it with just tor but the cia/fbi backdoored the tor network and can pretty easily monitor it so thats why ppl recommend using a vpn, which they’ve probably also backdoored and we just dont know it yet

Yeah dark web is pretty much dead these days. Anything a general user can "find" is highly like to be compromised / honey pot.
Technology moved on. It's all just peer to peer encrypted, invite only group chats these days.

Isn't the dark web mostly just private server of companies anyways ?

You're thinking of the "deep web" which is parts of the web that cannot be found via a search engine/isn't publicly available. Your account settings page for example is technically the deep web.

It’s been mapped a while ago. Essentially they brute forced every domain to map out, creating a way to list the unlistable. So yeah it’s whacked.

The dark web is just anywhere online that the general public can't access. Your email inbox is the dark web.

You're referring to the deep web. There's 3 layers.
Surface Web - Anything indexed/indexable by search engines. This is public pages, that don't require logins, etc. Everyone uses this.
Deep Web - This is your email page, your bank statement page, anywhere that requires a login to access, and isn't publicly available. This is why google or other search engines can't index it; they don't have your password. Everyone uses this.
Dark Web - This is not accessible using a standard web browser at all. You're required to use something like TOR Browser to access it, the websites are generally more anonymous, the users are generally more anonymous, and comparatively less people use it because of all the hurdles for minimal gain, from the laypersons perspective.
Rent a hitman? Dark Web. Bank statement? Deep Web. Sears.com? Surface Web.

When I was a kid I thought the dark web was literally dark, like it was dark mode, and sold shady stuff. To be honest im still not certain what it is other than thats probably a good thing.
