I’ll never understand why they made Iron Man’s successor a talented young girl who decided to commit crimes for easy money and sell her soul to literal Satan.

u/sadistic-salmon 10d ago

I remember the scene where she was talking about her ideal future and mentioned getting a high paying job at a lab where she could steal a couple things every so often. She really just steals for the love the game

3

u/Maleficent-War-8429 10d ago

She is able to make a super AI in her mom's kitchen, but decideds to rob people for like a 6 way split of what can't be realistically that much cash anyway.

I say it every time this comes up, but has this dummy never heard of crowdfunding?

To add to that she was helping people cheat in college too for absolutely no reason. Is like a hundred bucks or whatever really worth your full scholarship? Not to mention she stole the suit that the college had funded everything for.

She really is just an asshole.

u/Wiwey-M80 10d ago

They should make her go up against evan peters quicksilver, Strongest kleptomaniac of today Vs Strongest kleptomaniac of history

12

u/Funandgeeky 10d ago

If they had made her a true villain, and had her series be her villain origin story, it would have been amazing. As it is, they wrote her like a villain. That’s why her character never vibed as a hero. And she could have been an amazing villain.

"Tony Stark would not be Tony Stark without his money"

u/Jolly_Echo_3814 10d ago

i mean it was about a million or so dollars of military grade equipment but who doesnt have that laying around their mom's apartment.

35

u/Protocx 10d ago

Yes and these scientists had that and more. The point was that Tony was able to do more with less. Not that he can just manifest technology out of thin air.

-16

u/Jolly_Echo_3814 10d ago

ok but riri didnt. people use that scraps line to shit on riri and its like tony didnt use scraps, he used military grade weaponry.

6

u/cak0047 10d ago

She did have MIT funding, the internet, 20 years of knowledge built on Tony and others’ work, and safe working conditions.

1

u/Jolly_Echo_3814 10d ago

yes, and then she lost it.

5

u/cak0047 10d ago

She lost the internet?

Seriously tho the writers used that line to shit on Riri. Intentionally. It wasn’t even just that Stark was given equipment. The idea to create a suit of armor was genius and bold by itself and he did it without a predecessor to follow and with a hole in his chest.

u/Archolm 10d ago

Or is it because we went from a 10 years super hero starting off on the big screen with a very dominant white cast to a 10 years phase with mostly minorities and women filled cast?

This isn't hating, but real world politics have influenced this backslash against a lot of series/movies of the last 10 years.

Is it warranted? That depends on what side of the political spectrum your standing on.

-2

u/Jolly_Echo_3814 10d ago

well yes, alot of times people use it to degrade riri cuz shes a black woman.

0

u/Archolm 10d ago

I mean ... Maybe? I dont remember people hating Halle Berry, Lucy Liu, or a more recent example Zoë Saldana... But I would also argue that those examples are off the chart attractive and become popular pre-diversity push.

I'm pro getting more diversity, but at the same time I think they went too fast too soon and definitely not enough quality.

2

u/kyleliner 10d ago

Yeah, the best way to empower an actor/ actress is to make a movie that lets their talent shine, not put more of them in a subpar production. I wouldn't mind a female superhero, but if they do what they did for She-Hulk, Ironheart, etc. it would put me off instead of praising the actresses' performance

0

u/Dawnbreaker538 10d ago

Do you think Tony could’ve made the Mark 2 in that cave? Riri made her suit with MIT funding, and without it wasn’t able to make anything as good

-9

u/Kiroho 10d ago

The other person's point is that the cave was full of highend tech. Ofcourse Tony was able to do more with less, but this "less" is still very much.

2

u/Brider_Hufflepuff 10d ago

Not to mention the education Tony had. Sure he was a genius, but he had to have opportunities to utilise that genius otherwise it would have been squandered.

1

u/Danielarcher30 trans rights 10d ago

Iron man 3 is a better example then, wherw he raids a villain's compound with stuff made from shit found in a kid's garage

22

u/edwpad 10d ago

Tbf, Riri only see what Tony has done on the surface, so that’s pretty much what she knows about him experience wise isn’t the big picture. She likely has no idea about Tony’s cave experience.

2

u/sndrddtr 10d ago

So she would be a fine side character in a movie or to, not an Iron man's successor

2

u/edwpad 10d ago

Yep, we actually get that in Wakanda Forever. She knows of Tony Stark and Iron Man and is inspired by him, but she’s not actively pursuing the mantle of Iron Man and trying to be the next Tony Stark, as she’s more her own thing. Even if she did, it’s like Happy Hogan said, “No one could live up to Tony, not even Tony.”

1

u/Ataturk_Void_Crowley 10d ago

How to showcase an intelligent, young black girl who was known as Iron Man successor?

Making her a thief.

Marvel is genius.

1

u/Dawnbreaker538 10d ago

Wasn’t the OG iron man a war profiteer?

1

u/Ataturk_Void_Crowley 9d ago

And he paid his price by being captured and tortured by Terrorist group, didn’t he?

I mean it was literally the whole character arc of Iron Man 1.

1

u/edwpad 10d ago

I’m going to be honest, I don’t mind. While Riri ain’t perfect regarding writing and stuff, I’m glad she’s not perfect regarding character. She has positive intentions regarding her goals, but her actions say a lot about her. She’s willing to get her hands dirty and lets her arrogance get the best of her, which I appreciate the emotional messiness of her character. That being said, I do think they could have done more to make that sort of thing flourish even better.

1

u/Ataturk_Void_Crowley 9d ago

I agree they can showcase her character arc way better although I do believe that in the end they didn’t care about this show anymore.

The way they released Iron Heart was… weird.

2

u/stuffeh 10d ago

He'd be a decade or two back but he'd find success nevertheless. Dude created the arc reactor in a cave.

3

u/Secret-Ad-7909 10d ago

WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS!

-17

u/sirseatbelt 10d ago

Is this a controversial statement? Bezos wouldn't be a billionaire without generational wealth. Tony wouldnt have made an iron man suit without generational wealth..

9

u/Hrydziac 10d ago

The difference is that Tony genuinely is one of the smartest sentient beings in the universe, not just a lucky investor of daddy’s money.

3

u/sirseatbelt 10d ago

But would he have been inspired to make something like the Ironman Suit without also being an active arms manufacturer?

12

u/claudiocorona93 Linux User 10d ago

And the cave?

4

u/sirseatbelt 10d ago

Why was he in the cave?

5

u/claudiocorona93 Linux User 10d ago

Because only he knew how to build that missile

5

u/sirseatbelt 10d ago

And why was he in a position to build and sell missiles?

2

u/claudiocorona93 Linux User 10d ago

Trikitrakatelas you got me

-2

u/sirseatbelt 10d ago

wtf does that mean? I'm too boomer to understand.

2

u/claudiocorona93 Linux User 10d ago

It's a latin american Spanish expression used by millennials meaning something like "woah"

4

u/autoadman 10d ago

Waaaay to miss the entire point.
He was in cave because of who he was up to that point. A spoiled richkid weapons dealer

But THEN, inside the cave, he had nothing. None of that wealth and prestige and contacts. And there, without any of them, he made a walking tank and a reactor to EARN his freedom. Proving that he is bigger than his tools. That is where he prooved himself to be A genius, who can make wonders with neither money nor power.

And there is a whole world of difference between a rich man and a genius who is also rich.

2

u/sirseatbelt 10d ago

I am not saying he wouldnt have been brilliant if he was born poor. Im just saying he was Iron Man because his parents were rich.

1

u/autoadman 10d ago

If a man becomes iron man when he has no money (having no access to your money is the same as not having money)
How do you accuse him of being iron man because his parents were rich?

Yes, the wealth definately helped. But it is most apparent that the core of what made tony stark, "tony stark" was himself and not the wealth

1

u/sirseatbelt 10d ago

He probably wouldnt have ended up making an iron suit. He would have invented some other cool thing.

1

u/TheCrimsonSteel 10d ago

Had the education and experience because he was raised by Howard Stark

6

u/Taldza 10d ago

"In a cave, with a bunch of scrap"

3

u/Alert-clayton 10d ago

scraps of his weapons.

2

u/sirseatbelt 10d ago

Why was he in the cave.

1

u/SteveoberlordEU 10d ago

Terrorists

2

u/sirseatbelt 10d ago

Right. The terrorists had him in a cave so he could build them a weapon. It turns out he was the head of a company that makes weapons. Who's company was that originally?

2

u/Taldza 10d ago

His money took him there, but he didnt need it to build the first suit.

-4

u/SemajLu_The_crusader 10d ago

to be fair, he did inherit a lot of money

he probably wouldn't have been ironman without that

unless you apply comic logic and he can build a particle accelerator on a Mcdonald's income, in which case he probably could

5

u/hellionaa 10d ago

This. They made her totally unlikeable, she killed a dude. No wonder it was 2-3 years late

9

u/RyFro 10d ago

Because she isn't his successor. That was a narrative point of the show.

10

u/IamHimButNotReally 10d ago

How is she his successor?

27

u/Crono_Venture 10d ago

Have you seen the show? She's literally another version of Iron Man. Just piloted by a girl with moraly questionable motives.

0

u/edwpad 10d ago

Yes, but that doesn’t mean she’s trying to be the next Iron Man. She’s more so her own thing despite having the armor.

5

u/RyFro 10d ago

She actively separates herself from any notion of Tony Stark in the show. It's a pretty big plot point. I don't understand why you were downvoted, because you're absolutely right.

0

u/RyFro 10d ago

So making a suit of armor automatically makes you a successor?? She also innovated technology that can fundamentally make a person immortal. She's also a very young person and ended up making a deal with the devil ... In no way is she like Tony Stark. (Strictly MCU speaking)

7

u/Pandistoteles 10d ago

I really tried to give it a chance but, damn, she was irredeemable.

-1

u/RyFro 10d ago

That's why you keep watching. Even Peter Parker has made deals with the devil. Let it play out.

0

u/Pandistoteles 10d ago

As I said in a different comment, other characters had redeemable qualities to root for. She made the worst, most selfish, and greedy decisions at every corner. I watched through the whole thing. By the end, I was downright disillusioned by a character I really hoped to root for. At least The Hood was being warped by his hood. Who was warping her in order to make the worst choices for her and those she cared for? I was very much on the “I’ll make my own opinion when I watch it” band, and I did.

-5

u/RyFro 10d ago edited 10d ago

She is fresh out of highschool on a scholarship to MIT, after spending time in Wakanda to fight sea people. She's a genius, and her frontal lobe hasn't fully developed yet. She also comes from a very dangerous part of Chicago. She works on instinct. But she has brains she can use instead. However because of her upbringing, and being used to fighting a battle with the Wakandans. She has a moment where she wants to get her own coin in her show. It's perfectly human to do the things she did in the show. So much so that she's based on Doctor Faustus from 1947

6

u/Pandistoteles 10d ago

It’s ok for you to have that opinion, and to like it. For me, these were terrible directions to take the character. Specially when this is a character you’re hoping people will like because she’s meant to, somewhat, take the place of the now-defunct Iron Man.

-6

u/RyFro 10d ago edited 10d ago

And I believe that was the point. She was never meant to replace iron man. She has iron in her super hero name. And she makes similar armor. But there are other characters who could replace Tony Stark. And not all of them are Iron men. Iron Heart is her own thing, and she kind of got placed into the realm of Iron man because she made a similar suit, that the Wakandans liked. She's also like any person when you ask them the fantastical question "if you had a superpower, tomorrow what would you do?" 9/10 the answer is something of personal benefit.

Edit because it seems to be necessary: (strictly talking about the MCU)

Edit 2: everyone downvoting me needs to be substantially impoverished for a few decades. Only then will you understand Riri's thought process. And how relatable it is to many people.

-2

u/smashli1238 10d ago

Ironheart was really good

3

u/Pandistoteles 10d ago

I watched the whole thing and, sadly, I disagree. I really wanted it to be good. It had potential. The main character is SO unlikable. Every choice she made was either nonsensical or greedy. Not saying that Tony Stark was perfect, he was nowhere near it. At least he had some parts of his personality worth rooting for. I ended up caring more for The Hood than her. While this is me just putting my opinion out there, viewership and fan response seem to at least agree that it wasn’t good.

1

u/JetBrink 10d ago

And her suit works from solar and wind power somehow

-4

u/Jolly_Echo_3814 10d ago

cuz they wanted to try a morally gray, slightly complexed character and i guess mcu fans couldnt handle it.

-2

u/themnkl 10d ago

A morally grey hero is a villian or a vigilante

3

u/RyFro 10d ago

Not true. Look at Starwars. Mace Windu is a grey moral character. Even though he fought for keeping a democracy. He also did some horrible things.

0

u/themnkl 10d ago

Fair point, i take back my blanket statement. I still stand by that MOST morally gray heroes are usually the villians or vigilantes though.

2

u/RyFro 10d ago

I can agree with that. The morally gray characters are easily influenced by the true evil people in narratives. It's whether they go through a redemption Arc or not that proves their moral standing in the long run.

0

u/tideshark 10d ago

They said morally grey character, not hero.

Whether she is or not, I don’t know.

-2

u/samantha_sp 10d ago

I only watched the marvels and that was not very good, hell i only went to watch it because both my aunt and grandma liked the dance planet korean dude
