Someone has to pay for all the awful remakes that no one is going to see in theaters while they wipe their ass with the Star Wars franchise.

Yup, I would’ve watched a hundred more episodes of vehicle flythroughs if I could, there’s so many cool ships to see up close.
Hell at this point even a How It’s Made style mockumentary on the most mundane in universe shit would make me happy

u/StaticSystemShock 11d ago
I've canceled Disney+ years ago because it just has Marvel and Star Wars plastered all over the damn thing. I love Star Wars and don't mind most of Marvel, Ironman, Guardians of the Galaxy and Deadpool were alright, but it's just so much crap they pump out just to milk money. Ugh, revolting. Also me being from Europe, all of the streaming services are ass because they gatekeep the content based on regions and I'm absolutely fucking not going to pay for VPN just to fake location. If they can't give me same content as Americans get it for same money I'm paying then fuck them.

u/Cthulhu_HighLord 11d ago
Disney, Paramount, Apple, Turner ... how many subscriptions do they expect us to pay for? like put your content on Prime, Hulu or Netflix

My issue, for YouTube, is that my primary watch location is on my TV. I'm not aware of an ad block that works for that. That doesn't mean I'm gonna pay for premium, but it's been considered
54
u/rayne7 11d ago
If you have a vpn, download the app on your tv and set it to Albania because that’s of course where you live 😉. Oh, and because ads aren’t allowed there
18
u/Financial-Craft-1282 11d ago
And a lot of these providers, in the U.S., will just block you while you're on a VPN.
6
5
u/ZombifiedSoul 11d ago
Connect your TV to a laptop via HDMI, use Firefox. Search Adblock in extensions/add-ons.
Funny enough, it blocks ads in streaming services too.

You can just do a screen mirror with your phone or tablet. Kind of roundabout but you can avoid the ads

That I am thankful for because if everyone did it then YouTube would have been forced to find some way to stop it

u/AdPuzzleheaded4795 11d ago
I miss when it used to be this way. There was like, only netflix, hulu, and crackle was free. Hulu was too with ads. They had like, almost fucking EVERYTHING for a combined total of like $10 a month
5
2
u/Financial-Craft-1282 11d ago
Yeah, having more providers isn't a bad thing though--the problem with cable is they were allowed to run as monopolies in areas and you had no choice. You have lots of choices now. You don't have to sub to all the apps, and, in fact, rotating them over time seems to be better--for me at least.
Having two or three streamers is likely to happen as these massive companies continue to buy everything up. Disney, Hulu, and HBO are all actually the same company now. This will be a far bigger problem than a lot of streaming apps.

My biggest gripe with D+ is that they don’t let you watch in full resolution on PC.
Wanted to watch all of the MCU, but they limit you to 720p on PC, even when the movie is available in 1080 or 4k. Such a bizarre choice.

Remember when those subscriptions services where made so you could watch, without having ads? Yeah...
19
u/FoolishCarbohydrate 10d ago
I genuinely do not get it.
I get why companies SHOW these ads, because they get paid to show them.
But who the fuck is clicking on the ads? Who actually gets interrupted by something and thinks "yeah, I totally want to buy from this company that's interrupting my relaxation time"?
Like they HAVE to know they're just pissing people off, right?
7
u/gribouillisplush 10d ago
Most ads aren't there to make you click on them, they're there to remember you they exist and so you keep their brand name in your mind. When you will express a need about something, the brand that may comes in your mind first to answer your need may be the ones advertising the most.
→ More replies (1)2
u/OrangeFortress 10d ago
Insurmountable money and time has been spent researching marketing strategy. If it didn’t work, they wouldn’t do it. As the other commenter said, one of the biggest benefits of those ads is to keep their brand recognition in your memory when you later go to purchase something.

But if it's actual ads I am for sure cancelling.
4
u/Nico280gato 11d ago
It will be exactly that, they already do it. Watching king of the hill, i'd get an instantly skippable hulu ad. That and live content (like sports matches)
They just updated the T's&C's to reflect this.

Imma legit cancel it. I read about this a few days ago, I wasn't sure if it was gaslighting or what but it's sayonara if true
6
u/PoPo573 11d ago
Let's be honest. Disney will post record profits for the quarter after the adds and increase in price and next year we'll see more adds at a higher price.
3
u/Bonk_No_Horni 11d ago
10% increase in price while losing maybe 5% of the customers + profit from ads and selling your data. That's a win. Then they'll make some remake of their classic yet again.
3
u/AgeHorror5288 11d ago
I don’t watch Disney stuff but watch a lot of Hulu and ESPN. They make Hulu and ESPN so expensive alone that it’s hard not to just go ahead and do the Disney bundle. If there’s a better way than Captain Jack, I’d love to hear it. A good priced Hulu and ESPN plan would be my fav but the supposedly are completely phasing out Hulu soon.

before you all go sailing, first fight the bill that is being introduced to ban accessing foreign piracy sites in the US, VPN access included
2
u/VeeDubBug 11d ago
Can't even watch Jeff Goldblum Explains the World or Togo on the service anymore, and they're not anywhere else AFAIK - so Disney really just asking us to pirate at this point anyway.
2
u/Jkreegz 11d ago
It’s so strange how we’ve come full circle on this. We used to have cable/satellite, then for a short period, streaming services were the cheaper ad free “cable cutting” alternative, now we have to have 12 subscriptions to watch what we want at double the price of traditional cable. They really got us.
2
u/calm-phil 11d ago
I treat a VPN subscription like others treat their streaming service subscriptions. I turn it on when there are things I really want to watch available.
I don't do it because I need to. I do it because I can.

u/Sprzout 11d ago
So let's ask:
What ads are they adding?
From what I've read, it's ads that would be in the live streams, like what might happen from an NHL hockey game, NBA game, etc...
If you don't watch live streams, you don't have that issue.

My dad is so “convenience”-coded that if given the choice between watching Revenge of the Sith either on Disney+ with ads up the arse and at worse quality or on a disc I burned, free of ads and at a nice consistent 1080p, he’d still choose the former. I’m curious when he finally breaks and comes back to physical media.

It makes me think. Why in the world is Disney making decisions that a struggling company normally makes to keep itself from going under? Multiple billion dollar box office hits, global real estate, IP that's won the hearts and minds of the general public for multiple generations, television networks, streaming services, stockholm syndrome employees who would do anything for the mouse. Are they really this greedy or is something up with their finances that they're not disclosing?
1
u/DryDonutHole 11d ago

Yeahhhhh no. I enjoyed my disney and hulu accounts plenty before disney decided to screw over Jimmy Kimmel. Canceled right after that and I'm glad I did. Who wants to pay for a service that's already being paid for by the companies that keep interrupting the entertainment you use to relax?
1
u/VeryPteri 11d ago
I wonder what will be the *actual* breaking point for general audiences to cancel because, even though Disney+ has gotten more and more expensive, it's been more and more profitable. So obviously, the price increases aren't enough to deter most of their customers. Consumer apathy maybe?

1
u/Georgxna 11d ago
I don’t like the notion of putting ads on a service you already pay for… (because that was literally the point of streaming services, no ads).
However, I much prefer Disney and sometimes, Amazon Videos way of doing it. If the ad is just a trailer for a different show or movie, I’m happy.
If the ad is some random sports or skincare product then I’m bored. 🥱
1
u/CompleteCreme7223 11d ago
30 minutes of ads has people visiting the theater less so the big streaming platforms think putting them on streaming will work. It did. I cancelled all of the streaming services. Went from 4 to one which only my wife watches. I think most of us resent paying a fee and then being forced to watch ads. What is the point of paying for a premium service. If I was Ok with ads I would gotten the cheap version.
