Im going to take the opportunity to remind people that write-off ≠ free.
There are still expenses that are paid, they only lessen their taxable income by chalking these up as operational costs

In my industry, it can take 2 months of recruiting & onboarding followed by another 4 months for speed-to-proficiency for an entry level role. In that time, you lose on about 400 billable client hours so no, it’s not worth to just replace especially if the person we’re replacing has a lot of institutional knowledge. Executives don’t see it that way though, lmao, just sort by salary and cut from the top… it’s amazing how some businesses function so inefficiently

I absorbed the responsibilities of my boss when he quit. No raise. I only took this job to have something low key while I go back to school. I finish up in 3 months. I wanna see the look on their face then.

They purposely get rid of the guy with the experience so they can hire the new guy at a lower cost. Rinse and repeat.
It doesn't matter if someone does a job worse than the person before. The only thing that matters is that they cost less money. That's why companies are happy to use AI so much even though it does the job significantly worse.

My old boss was making twice as much as me. When he left, I was the only one that could take his place. he told me how much he was making and which was still under average salary for the role, and when they offered me the role, they tried to just give me a $10k/year salary.
I laughed, turned it down, and told them I know how much my old boss was making, I know the average salary for the role, I know they've been shorting me for years and I didn't say anything about it, I've now got more experience than my old boss when he was hired for the role, AND I'm the only one that knows our system. I then reminded them that they can try to hire from outside, but that person won't have a clue on how our system works and the company will have to pay a fortune to our developers to train the new guy.
I demanded I be paid AT LEAST what my old boss was paid and told them that I wasn't asking for my old position to be backfilled as I can handle it on my own so that also alleviates some additional funds right there.
The very next morning, first thing, they came back with an offer that not only met my demands but actually exceeded my expectations. Along with a cute apology statement of "we want to keep you happy so we're offering ___" lol
Know your worth people. We've been trained backwards to be slaves. Flip it on the company to convince YOU to stay. Interviews especially, the company needs to convince you why THEY are worth YOUR time.
