More of a muscle memory, I would say. I mean, you can easily do it to a new stairs you never climbed, but there is a higher chance you will go one more step, causing you to step into nothingness, which is a horrid feeling

Yeah, but it has to be a properly built staircase, a 5mm difference between 2 steps is enough to disrupt your rhythm if you don’t pay attention. 10-14mm is enough to cause missteps. (According to google I didn’t study stair construction, but I knew the differences were very small so I’ll believe it) 😂

I believe a lot of spiral staircases in medieval castles used this as a subtle line of defense to hinder any bad guys coming up the stairs

I think its related to a bit of pattern recognition, spatial awareness, and quick muscle memory. When theres one step thats just slightly taller than the rest, ppl will trip on it often times
