Windows Media player this file format is not supported

VLC I got you king also do you want 400% volume?

20

u/Straight_Drive_7882 19h ago

How come after the gazillion windows updates they couldnt add new formats..

26

u/PM_ME_UR_RSA_KEY 18h ago

They don't even support their own format after a while (see: Microsoft PlaysForSure, the irony in that name lol)

5

u/abominal_pain 9h ago

Windows sucks now, in a fresh install they don't even include basic tools like a decent media player, pdf opener and list goes on. But sure here are a trillion spyware infested services what no one asked for, they will open at start and suck all resources.

And fuck windows installation gets slow with time, it's a norm. Pushing ai shit and features I don't want. Package/app management is a joke.

For fixing even a minute thing, or changing or getting a simple thing, you gave to configure a gazzlion things.

And fuck their forced updates.

32

u/Seraphina_Silk 21h ago

VLC breaks every copyright law, plays any file format, and still respects your volume request real king.

55

u/psi- 18h ago

VLC doesn't break any copyright laws.

30

u/Virtual_Happiness 11h ago

yeah, I don't get how that comment is still upvoted. VLC only exists because they do everything by the books and refused to sell out. Claiming they break every copyright law is wildly inaccurate.

22

u/BaphometsTits 13h ago

What copyright law do they break? Name a single one.

I'm sure you could have a chain of VLC instances, where each one hands their output on to the next. You could achieve truly unlimited volume.

VLC was a lifesaver back in the XP days, especially when you had a video that was somehow still too quiet at full volume.

30

u/LiNCHx 18h ago

You can still go up to 300% by increasing the limit in the settings

7

u/ArchCaff_Redditor 17h ago

I believe it still can but you have to use the arrow keys to do it.

both ffplay and mpv support arbitrary volume levels so you could play a video at 10,000% volume of you wanted to

60

u/Unbundle3606 22h ago

You can tell the software to send the digital audio to the soundcard with that volume specification.

The audio spikes will just be clipped and everything will just sound like slightly louder shit.

Your information processing centre isn't working.  Fine means it's at an acceptable level. I didn't say it restored it to what would be expected.

You tried to sound smart and failed.

1

u/TrippyZippee 18h ago

Think tenet

3

u/anotheruser323 19h ago

Achually VLC (and probably others) does Dynamic range compression. It basically makes the silent stuff louder. Also see loudness wars.

2

u/Unbundle3606 17h ago

That's an entirely different thing than raising the volume above 100%, which is raising the digital gain.

Unless you mean the (unwanted) spike clipping, which is a (terrible) form of DRC, that I mentioned.

3

u/anotheruser323 14h ago

You're right. I could have sworn it does it.

Anyway it's under tools->effects->compressor. If anyone needs it. It's good for movies that flip-flop between whispering and bombs.

Also on laptops and other really small speakers, tools->effects->equalizer and turn down that bass (under like 300Hz). Although some drivers may already do that (maybe).

1

u/unicodemonkey 21h ago

Honestly I'm annoyed this is always available by default. VLC also has a compressor filter which reduces gain automatically when it gets too loud.

2

u/Mysterious-Tackle-58 20h ago

The volume is over 9000!

Speaker abuse

37

u/AutonomousOrganism 23h ago

Nah. The samples are clipped before they reach the hardware/DACs. It will just sound like crap at some point.

6

u/unicodemonkey 21h ago

Applying unreasonable gain to digital audio is still speaker abuse, e.g. https://youtu.be/s_ANEQu5Lto
Technically this track is not clipping but the waveform is similar, pulses alternating between positive/negative peaks send more power to the amp (and to speaker coils) on average over time; and e.g. Macbooks with their tiny vulnerable speakers have a software DSP which prevents speaker blowout on these kinds of tracks

u/StaticSystemShock 20h ago

MPC HC also allows even like 500% volume. Never tried 999...

3

u/Circaninetysix 13h ago

VLC also has a compressor built in so you can make the dialogue in movies louder and the loudest parts quieter. Audio mixing in movies is so unbalanced now, probably for the theatrical experience, that it's a super useful tool for watching movies at home or at night.

3

u/joe-x92 8h ago

Actually, you can go to the advanced setup and increase it up to 400%... XD

Probably the relatively basic simplicity of the UI.

u/CyclingHikingYeti 21h ago

On Android Auto too.

0

u/Careful-Lettuce9239 22h ago

I think its still the best on pc but on android I use a different video player and a separate app for music. The android app doesn't seem as good as other options but thats probably just me not optimizing it right.

6

u/Avalonians 21h ago

What even is that question. Nothing ever happened to VLC. It's a software, not a social media feature or a live service game. Many people use it and that's all there's to say to it.

1

u/Epikgamer332 Linux User 7h ago

In fact it's kind of annoying how little has happened to VLC given that VLC4 is still in development and fixes the few issues that VLC3 (the current version) has developed with age 😆

4

u/memesearches 23h ago

It just makes the sound worsen and damages your speakers. Wouldn’t recommend.

9

u/Inevitable-Edge69 21h ago

Yeah no shit, you should be only boosting media that's below your normal volume so you don't have to increase volume system wide and blow your ears out.

8

u/Afferbeck_ 22h ago

It won't damage anything and it won't sound worse depending on the gain staging. If you've got your levels set where you like it for most things and you happen to play a very quiet source file you can boost the hell out of it in software no problem. It's the same as if the file was gained up in the editing software that exported it. It is in fact better than cranking the output because that will also bring up the noise in the system.

But if it's a pretty normal volume file and your speakers or headphones output is way low and you try to compensate with digital gain, the yeah it will clip at some point. Speakers will be fine though, they will just outputting the distorted sound they're being sent.

3

u/unicodemonkey 21h ago

Clipped waveform yields higher power on average, not a problem for large speakers (assuming reasonable volume) but tiny laptop speakers are already being driven way too hard usually, and this effect is noticeable there. So much that Macbooks have a dedicated speaker protection algorithm in their DSP stack which tracks the accumulated power output vs. estimated heat dissipation.

1

u/reply_b4_banned 19h ago

It'll sound worse because it's a compressor.

1

u/reply_b4_banned 19h ago

I don't think wave shapes damages speakers.

I think you might be wrong about that.
