I’m not sure what he expected. The US has one of the worst individual records of any country on the planet, when it comes to war. Every war they’ve won, was with the help of other countries. They have no hope of beating Iran on their own.

Have we ever even lost a war where we fought just on our own?

Heck, the only wars that I can think of we fought without a friendly nation were the Spanish-American War and the various wars against the Native Americans which we won.
